Firing Line Wins Sunland Derby at Sunland Park
Las Vegas, NV - The $800,000 Grade 3 Sunland Derby was contested at Sunland Park in New Mexico on Sunday, March 22 - a 1 1/8 mile Kentucky Derby qualifying race for three year olds. Arnold Zetcher's overwhelming 1-5 favorite Firing Line made quite a statement in the race - prevailing by and unfathomable 14 1/4 lengths under the guidance of Gary Stevens. He earned 50 qualifying points toward the Run for the Roses in May and opened a few eyes with the impressive win. 6-1 shot Where's the Moon was a distant second and Pain and Misery finished 2 1/4 lengths back in third. Tiznow R J finished fourth, followed by Dirt Monster, Why Two, and Malibu Mogul, to complete the order of finish. 3-1 second choice Lord Nelson was unfortunately scratched.
