Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream Park

Dave Bond

Las Vegas, NV -- Gulfstream Park's turf track takes center stage on Sunday March 11th with the 28th running of the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes. Three year olds are featured in the Palm Beach that is run over 1 1/8 miles for a $150,000 purse.

A field of six three year olds will take to the track in race seven on Gulfstream's Sunday card with hopes of gaining a little momentum and some credibility ahead of this year's Triple Crown. Post time is 4:05 PM ET for a race that features Dale Romans trained Dullahan as the favorite and a few other interesting contenders hoping to make life interesting going forward.

Here is a list of the six quality entries and what they have done lately.

Palm Beach Stakes Race Favorites

Dullahan - hopes to follow in the steps of another Dale Romans trained colt, Paddy O'Prado who, like Dullahan did enough early to allow him to run on favored turf ahead of some bigger races on dirt later on in the year. The Palm Beach is Dullahan's first start of the year after finishing fourth last time out at the Grade 1 Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs in November. Before that was an impressive win at the Grade 1 Dixiana Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland in October.

Howe Great - should provide a good test for Dullahan - four starts, three wins and a second place finish. Howe Great has won three races in a row including the Kitten's Joy Stakes on January 21st and an Allowance race on December 15th - both at Gulfstream.

Remaining Field Entries

Coalport - has been up and down in four career starts. Coalport's ups include a win on Arlington Park turf and a second place finish in the Grade 3 Bourbon at Keeneland. The downs include a fourth last time out at the Dania Beach Stakes on December 18th and an 11th place finish at the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in November.

Csaba - finished sixth last time out in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream on February 26th and before that was fifth at the Dania Beach Stakes on December 18th. In five career starts Csaba has two wins and a third place finish.

Scorcher - is a long shot in this race having posted a seventh in an Allowance Optional Claiming race at Gulfstream last time out and before that a fifth in the Kitten's Joy Stakes at Gulfstream on January 21st.

Argentine Tango - in 12 career starts Argentine Tango only has one win. The last two races have resulted in a sixth and a third in a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming races at Gulfstream.
