2012 Dominion Day Stakes Race Favorites

Pender Harbour - won two-thirds of the Canadian Triple Crown last year and is coming off a win last time out at the Steady Growth Stakes here on June 17th to follow a rather disappointing ninth in the Grade 3 Eclipse - in his 2012 debut. He won last year's top honours as the country's champion three-year-old male. Pender Harbour finished his 2011 campaign with three wins and a second in his last five races - the lone poor performance coming in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx in September. Despite form unflattering recent performances Pender Harbour is the one to beat on Sunday.

Newsdad - most recently finished a disappointing fifth in the Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland on April 27th to follow an impressive victory over Simmard at the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream. Before that he finished a close second on February 26th in the Mac Diarmida. Prior to those impressive results Newsdad had a seven length win in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream on January 28th. Newsdad will be looking to bounce back from a bad performance last time out and has the speed and the endurance to be competitive.

Dominion Day Stakes 2012 | Remaining Field Entries

Hunters Bay - comes into the Dominion Day having won three of his last four starts - the last and perhaps most impressive victory coming in the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes here on May 26th to follow and Allowance Optional Claiming score here in April. Hunters Bay has five wins and three second place finishes in 10 career starts.

Stately Victor - won the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes in 2010 and raced to an OK eighth in the Kentucky Derby and a seventh in the Belmont Stakes that year. Since 2010 Statley Victor has not found the winning touch but he has come close lately - two consecutive seconds in a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming races. He also had a good string of third place finishes in graded stakes action last summer and fall proving that he does indeed have the talent to contend.

Straight Story - made her 2012 debut with a seventh place finish in the Grade 2 Dixie Stakes here after an impressive win to close out 2011 in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes at Woodbine in November. Prior to that win however was a pair of seventh place finishes and a sixth in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap.

Medidocihospisurg - has 40 career starts - ALL at Woodbine. He did win the Elgin Stakes here last September but has had mixed results overall. This year Medidocihospisurg has a second and two third place finishes in five starts. If races were won by consonants in one's name then Medidocihospisurg would certainly be competitive.
