2013 San Clemente Handicap Race Favorites

Unusual Way - Jeff Bonde trained filly already has 11 career starts with four wins, three seconds and a third place finish. She won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Filly Sprint Preview in November for arguably her best career result after a win in the Wine Country Debutante at Santa Rosa. In 2013 she has four starts with a win (last time out by 1 1/2 lengths in the minor Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate June 1), two seconds (the minor Sunland Park Oaks in March and the California Breeders Champion Stakes in January) and a third place finish. She has placed in her last seven starts and heads into the San Clemente in very competitive form. She won her only other start on turf, had drawn the rail and has evidently looked very good in workouts leading up to the San Clemente.

Iotapa - will make her sixth career start for trainer John Sadler. She won an Allowance Optional Claiming at Santa Anita February 15 after an eight month layoff and a Maiden Claiming score way back last June. She made her stakes debut April 6 and finished a very respectable second behind Beholder by 2 3/4 lengths in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks and won the minor Railbird Stakes as 7-5 favorite over Fiftyshadesofhay May 19. Last time out was another good effort - a second in the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks at Hollywood Park June 22. Three wins and two seconds in five career starts has Iotapa one of the ones to watch Sunday. She is the highweight for the San Clemente but makes her first start on grass.

She will be looking for a bounce back Sunday and races against a few contenders she's already beaten this year.

She hasn't tasted victory since but had an OK third in the Grade 2 Beaumont Stakes in April, a fifth in the Edgewood Stakes in May, a second in the Manhattan Beach Stakes in June and an OK third last time out in the Le Cle Stakes at Hollywood park July 7. She won her first two starts in England before shipping to North America and will be looking for her first win since February.
