Ontario Derby 2014 at Woodbine

Las Vegas, NV - Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario will play host to the Grade 3 Ontario Derby on Sunday, September 21. Horses three years old will take to Woodbine's All Weather track and race 1 1/8 miles searching for the winner's share of the $150,000 purse.

A field of eight have been confirmed for the Ontario Derby - race 9 on Woodbine's Saturday schedule. Post time is 5:07 PM. Let's take a peek into the past performances of all eight combatants for this Grade 3 stakes including the two best three year olds Canada has to offer.

2014 Ontario Derby Race Favorite Entries

Ami's Holiday - Josie Carroll trained colt broke maiden at first asking and recorded a great win the Grade 3 Grey Stakes at Woodbine October 6. He went on to a disappointing seventh after being DQ's as favorite in the Coronation Stakes November 17 and an OK third in the Display Stakes December 8. Ami's Holiday raced all three legs of Canada's Triple Crown and placed in all - a win last time out in the Breeders' Stakes here August 17 followed a third in the Prince of Wales Stakes July 29 and a good behind Lexie Lou second in the Queens's Plate July 6. Before that was a fourth to Mr Speaker in the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland in April. Ami's Holiday has certainly been trending upward and is expected to be competitive this weekend. Coltimus Prime - three-time stakes-placed colt is coming off a nice win over Ami's Holiday in the minor Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie July 29 after a somewhat disappointing ninth in the Queen's Plate and an Allowance score on this track in June. He raced to a disappointing ninth in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby March 8 and a fifth in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes in April but has looked much better since - two wins and a second in his last four starts overall. Coltimus Prime looks to be in decent form ahead of this weekend and will have Eurico Rosa Da Silva in the reins from gate 2 in his latest try against rival Ami's Holiday.

Ontario Derby 2014 | Remaining Contenders

Jose Sea View - has eight career starts for trainer Reade Barker with three wins, a second and two third place finishes. His only graded stakes start came in November - a fifth in the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes at Aqueduct which he followed with a nice win over Coltimus Prime and Ami's Holiday in the minor Display Stakes on this track in December. Sea Joe View has four starts this year with as second and two third place finishes - the best results being a second in the minor Woodstock Stakes here in April and a third in the minor Tom Ridge Stakes at Presque Isle Downs in May. He looks for his first graded stakes score and first win since the Regret Stakes Sunday when he leaves from post 5 with Emma-Jayne Wilson in the reins.

Freitag - Mark Frostad trained gelding has nine career starts already with three wins, two seconds and two third place finishes. He makes his graded stakes debut off an OK third in the minor OLG Elgin Stakes August 27, a sixth in the minor Toronto Cup in July and two straight Allowance scores on this track. He has yet to shine in stakes company - hopes are that he will break through this weekend. Justin Stein has the mount from post 3.

Squeeze the King - Brian Lynch trained gelding has three career starts with a win, a second and a third place finish. Last time out was a respectable third in his stakes debut - the minor Breeders' Stakes here August 17 after a maiden score in his second career start. Squeeze the King makes his graded stakes debut Sunday with David Moran in the saddle from the rail.

Florida Won - Mark Casse trained colt has six career starts with one win, one second and two third place finishes. Last time out was a pedestrian fifth in the minor Toronto Cup here July 20 after a third in the minor Charlie Barley Stakes on this track July 5, a second in an Allowance here in June and a maiden score at Churchill Downs in May. Patrick Husbands rides from the outside post as Florida Won looks for his first stakes score.

Lunar Rover - H. James Bond trained colt makes his stakes debut Sunday after four career starts yielded just one win - a maiden score last time out at Saratoga. Before that was a pair of fourths and a fifth in similar races - at three different tracks. Gary Boulanger will be in charge as Lunar Rover looks to make a splash in stakes company from gate 4.

Picozza - Todd Pletcher trained colt finished a good second in the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes at Keeneland in April bus hasn't been all that great since. Last time out was a sixth in an Allowance at Saratoga which followed a third and a second respectively in similar races at Monmouth Park. He has 10 career starts with one win, four seconds and a third place finish and departs from gate 6 with Jesse Campbell in the irons.
