2016 Eddie Read Stakes Race Preview at Del Mar Race Track

Midnight Storm 5-2 - defending fifth place finisher in this race won the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby in August, 2014 for trainer Phil D'Amato and had a second in the 2015 Shoemaker Mile in June but hadn't been the same after that before a terrific win last time out on the 2016 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita June 4. Before his most recent win was a seventh in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Classic at Churchill Downs May 7, a fourth in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March and a nice win in the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap at Del Mar November 27. He also had a sixth in the Grade 3 Eddie D Stakes October 3 and a tenth in the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar in August. Midnight Storm has six wins and three seconds in 16 career starts and has placed in just two of his last seven starts overall (both graded stakes wins however). He hopes for his second straight graded stakes score Sunday on a Del Mar turf track that he's won three of four starts - from post 5 with Rafael Bejarano guiding the morning line favorite.

Bolo 3-1 - has 11 career starts with four wins, a second and two third place finishes for trainer Carla Gaines and enters off an ugly tenth in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs May 7. It followed a respectable second in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March and a win in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes February 13. Before that he was last of nine as favorite in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational last July 4. Other results of note include a disappointing twelfth in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, a third in the 2015 Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby April 4 and another third in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes - his graded stakes bow March 7, 2015. Bolo has won two of his last five starts overall but has a knack of throwing in a dud as well. He hopes to rebound off another one of those duds when he leaves from the outside post 9 with Mike Smith scheduled to ride the morning line second choice.
