Gulfstream's 2011-2012 racing season kicks off Saturday, December 3, with a first race post of 12:35 p.m. Gulfstream Park's opening day feature, the $100,000 Spectacular Bid for 2-year-olds at six furlongs, drew 31 nominations, including Nashua Stakes (G2) winner Vexor, Jack Price Juvenile winner For Oby, and Keeneland 75th Anniversary winner Luke of York.
Every sport has a definitive year-ending event to crown its champions. In Thoroughbred racing, the Breeders' Cup World Championships is the culmination of the horse racing season worldwide and the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic is the defining event of the international racing season. Total purses for this year’s two-day event at Churchill Downs, Nov. 4-5, are $26 million.
Santa Anita's 2011 Autumn Meeting, which begins Sept. 30, will offer 13 graded stakes, including six Grade I events which will be run as part of Santa Anita's Breeders' Cup prep program that encompasses the first two weekends of the 24-day race meeting. Santa Anita will present four Grade I stakes on Saturday, Oct. 1: the $250,000 Norfolk Stakes for 2-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles; the $250,000 Goodwood Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles; the $250,000 Yellow Ribbon Stakes presented by Emirates Airline for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares at 1 1/4 miles on turf, and the $250,000 Lady's Secret Stakes for fillies and mares 3-years-old and up at 1 1/16 miles.
Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice was made the 5-2 morning-line favorite for the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II). This year the lucrative purse for the 1 1/8-mile Pa. Derby Derby helped draw a nice group of nine 3-year-olds. In addition to Ruler On Ice, To Honor and Serve, one of the leading Triple Crown hopefuls entering the season, finally looks like he is rounding back into his expected form and enters the race off a dominating optional claiming win at Saratoga.
As we bid farewell to Del Mar and Saratoga for the time being, we say hello to Belmont Park, Turfway Park, Windsor Raceway , Fairplex Park & Laurel Park for their Fall meets.
