Grand River Raceway History

Grand River Raceway, Canada's newest racing and gaming destination, is located in the south end of the lovely village of Elora, Ontario and just minutes away from the historic town of Fergus. The area is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, a natural wonderland of towering pines, glacial rock formations and the majestic Grand River.

Grand River Raceway is owned and operated by the Woolwich Agricultural Society (WAS). The WAS is a not-for-profit corporation, incorporated under the Agricultural Societies Act of Ontario and operated by a volunteer board of directors.

Live harness racing is held at Grand River Raceway from June to October. The raceway also offers daily harness and thoroughbred simulcasts through four theaters. Notable races are the Battle Of The Belles and the Battle Of Waterloo on Industry Day.

Industry Day is Grand River Raceway's marquee event of the race season. It's staged annually during a special afternoon race card on each Civic Holiday Monday (the first Monday in August).

Industry Day began at Elmira Raceway in 1990 as a celebration of the harness racing industry. In December of 2003, the track relocated to a new facility in nearby Elora, ON called Grand River Raceway, and the first Industry Day was celebrated at its new home in August 2004.

Industry Day is one of Canadian harness racing's most celebrated events, attracting racing fans province-wide and beyond.

The event features Grand River Raceway's signature race, the Battle Of Waterloo (for 2-year-old Ontario sired pacing colts) which was introduced to Industry Day in 1998. The inaugural winner was Distinctiv Skeeter for trainer/driver Carl Jamieson.
