2012 Eddie D Stakes Race Favorites
Comma to the Top - Peter Miller trained gelding has won two of his last four starts - an Allowance score at Golden Gate on June 9 and the minor Pirate's Bounty Stakes at Del Mar September 5. He finished nineteenth in last year's Kentucky Derby, was sixth in the Grade 2 Sir Beaufort in December and was third in the Robert K Kerlan Memorial Handicap July 1 to name a few of his stakes results. He was fourth in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby before his latest win and brings a 4-2-0-1 record on turf into Friday's action.
Mensa Heat - is a two-time stakes winner that finished second most recently to Comma to the Top in the Pirate's Bounty on September 5. Mensa Heat was third in the Palos Verdes Stakes at Santa Anita on January 21 and before that won the On Trust Handicap at Hollywood Park in December. He has placed in three straight races and has failed to win this year but appears to be in decent form ahead of the Eddie D.
Eddie D Stakes 2012 | Remaining Field Entries
Unbridled's Note - Steve Asmussen trained colt hopes to build off a win in an Allowance Optional Claiming three races ago, a very good third in the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes July 29 and another decent third in the King's Bishop last time out at Saratoga on August 25. He has six career starts with two wins and two third place finishes and has placed in his last three overall.
Boxeur des Rues - started 2012 with a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming but has struggled since - a sixth in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap, and tenth place finishes in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes and the Grade 2 Dixie Stakes at Pimlico on May 19. Most recently Boxeur des Rues was fourth in the Pirate's Bounty to follow a fifth and fourth in a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming at Del Mar. He has placed in just one of his eight starts in 2012 and hasn't won since last May.
Red Sun - is an intriguing entry for trainer Carla Gaines. Red Sun has placed in all nine career starts with five wins, two seconds and two third place finishes. After nearly a year away Red Sun returned on August 30 with a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Del Mar and is undefeated in two starts on this very track.
