Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes at Santa Anita Park

Dave Bond

Las Vegas, NV -- The 53rd running of the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile comes our way from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California during an incredibly packed card this Saturday March 3rd. Horses four-and-up will be chasing a $300,000 purse over the distance of one mile on Santa Anita's Turf track.

The Kilroe Mile is just one of three Grade 1 races on the docket for Saturday - needless to say, the action will be palpable in California. A strong field of eight will contest the 10th race on Santa Anita's Saturday Card with a post time of 5:05 PM PST.

Frank E. Kilroe Mile Stakes Race Favorites

Mr. Commons - Mr. Commons is coming off an impressive win at the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes on February 4th and before that won the Sir Beaufort Stakes on this same track, over the same distance on December 26th. Mr. Commons has a good history at Santa Anita - four wins and two seconds in seven starts there. He did have a rather disappointing Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs in November (fifth) and he will start from the rail for the first time in his career. Still, Mr. Commons has to be considered the overwhelming favorite for the Kilroe Mile.

Jeranimo - Jeranimo finished a disappointing second at the Grade 2 San Gabriel on January 16th at Santa Anita after winning the race the year before. Jeranimo holds victories at the Grade 2 Strub Stakes and more recently the Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Hollywood in November. Jeranimo beat favorite Mr. Commons at the Oak Tree Mile last fall but finished two places behind Mr. Commons (seventh) at the Breeders' Cup Mile last year.

Remaining Field Entries

Willyconker - finished a surprising second in the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes on February 4th at Santa Anita and also finished second at an Allowance Optional Claiming race at Santa Anita in January. Before that won three straight races. Willyconker will be ridden by the accomplished Joel Rosario in this race.

Compari - absolutely loves the Santa Anita track having won six of eight starts there. Compari is a grass specialist whose accolades include a win at last year's Arcadia Stakes and the Sensational Star Stakes on January 28th.

Massone - finished a decent third at the Grade 2 Arcadia Stakes last time out to follow up a disappointing 7th place in the San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita on January 7th. Massone finished 4th in the Grade 3 Native Diver Handicap at Hollywood Park on December 3rd.

Jimmy Simms - will make his 2012 race debut at the Frank Kilroe Mile after a fifth place finish at the Grade 2 Fayette Stakes at Keeneland in October to close out 2011. He has six wins in 11 starts on grass.

Mega Heat - finished first in an Allowance optional Claiming race at Santa Anita on January 29th to follow up a fourth place finish at the California Cup Classic Stakes at Santa Anita in October. Mega Heat has five wins in nine career starts.

Make Music for Me - is the long shot in this race - 22 starts and only three wins. Most recently Make Music for Me finished fourth in an Allowance at Santa Anita February 9th and seventh in the Grade 2 Citation Handicap at Hollywood Park in November.
