He broke a long slump with an impressive 6 3/4 length win at 21-1 odds earning an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Classic on November 2. Second choice Palace Malice finished second while slight 5-2 favorite Flat Out, seeking his third consecutive Gold Cup victory for trainer Bill Mott had to settle for third. Brazilian-bred Vitoria Olimpica took fourth as the longest shot in the field, followed by Last Gunfighter, Alpha, Cross Traffic, and Kentucky Derby winner Orb.
