Always Dreaming Wins Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs
The most prestigious race on North American soil, the $2 million G1 Kentucky Derby was contested Saturday, May 6 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Some of the best three year olds in the world took to Churchill Downs dirt track and raced 1 1/4 miles. It was Always Dreaming who gained support and became the 9-2 race favorite that prevailed, taking advantage of an absolutely perfect trip in the slop and drawing away by 2 3/4 lengths - he now has four starts this year and four dominant wins. 33-1 shot Lookin At Lee finished a quality second in the field of 20 with 40-1 longshot Battle of Midway another five lengths back in third. Early favorite and 2017 Eclipse Award winner for two-year-old male Classic Empire came a slightly disappointing fourth at 6-1 odds while Practical Joke held on for fifth. Tapwrit was sixth while Gunnevera, 6-1 McCraken, Gormley, 9-2 co-favorite Irish War Cry, Hence, Untrapped, Girvin, Patch, J Boys Echo, Sonneteer, Fast and Accurate, Irap, and State of Honor completed the order of finish. Alternate entries Master Plan, Royal Mo scratched.
