Zakaroff Wins El Camino Real Derby at Golden Gate Fields
The $200,000 G3 El Camino Real Derby was contested Saturday, February 18 at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California - a 1 1/8 mile test for three year olds on Golden Gate's All Weather Track. It was Antone Metaxas' 48-1 longshot Zakaroff that upset the field and gained the 10 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby in May with a half-length victory over even-money favorite Ann Arbor Eddie who was eventually disqualified to fourth after the finish for interfering with Tribal Storm in the stretch. 9-2 third betting choice More Power to Him was the main beneficiary and got promoted to second while 10-1 shot Tribal Storm moved up to third. As mentioned, Ann Arbor Eddie was fourth in the field of seven with Colonel Samsen, Kona Dreams and 5-2 second choice Sheer Flattery completing the order of finish.
