Nyquist Wins Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park
The most intriguing race of the weekend, the $1 million Grade 1 Florida Derby was contested at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida on Saturday, April 2 - a 1 1/8 mile Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying race. West Coast invader Nyquist made quite a statement and remained undefeated in his career with a convincing 3 1/4 length win. With the win Nyquist gained 100 qualifying points toward the Kentucky Derby and installed himself as the unquestioned favorite for the Run for the Roses in a month's time. 21-1 shot Majesto finished a good second and earned 40 qualifying points while Fellowship got in for third at 16-1 odds and gained 20 points in the process. Mohaymen, 4-5 favorite in a field of 10 finished a disappointing fourth but was awarded 10 points while Sawyers Mickey, Copingaway, Takeittotheedge, Fashionable Freddy, Chovanes and Isofass completed the order of finish.
