It was 6-5 race favorite California Chrome that proved best on the day from post 11, avenging last year's second place finish in this race by a relatively easy five lengths. With the win California Chrome became the richest North American racehorse of all time with a staggering $12,532,650 in career earnings. 16-1 shot Mubtaahij finished second thanks to a strong move along the rail while Hoppertunity wound up third at 25-1 odds. Completing the order of finish were Special Fighter, second betting choice Frosted, Mshawish, Candy Boy, Keen Ice, Hokko Tarumae, Teletext, Vadamos, and Gun Pit.
