Cupid Wins West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer Racetrack
The $750,000 Grade 2 West Virginia Derby went down Saturday, August 6 at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in New Cumberland, West Virginia. Three year olds took to Mountaineer's dirt track and raced 1 1/8 miles. Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith's 3-2 race favorite Cupid prevailed in dominant fashion - by four lengths in the field of 10. 74-1 longshot Whateverybodywants finished second four lengths behind the winner and two lengths ahead of Name Changer who got in for third at 16-1 odds. Anaximandros, was a good fourth, while 2-1 second choice Suddenbreakingnews, who broke from post 10, disappointed in fifth. Forevamo, Adventist, Pinson, Van Damme and No Distortion completed the order of finish. Unfortunately two contenders - Mo Tom and Economic Model were scratched.
