Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park

Dave Bond, OTB Writer

Las Vegas, NV -- The Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes comes our way from Belmont Park this Saturday May 12th. Three year olds will race 1 1/8 miles on Belmont's main track in search of their share of the $200,000 purse.

A strong field of 12 including multiple graded stakes winners will go in race 9 on Belmont's Saturday schedule with a post time of 5:06 PM. There is a lot on the line on Saturday - a good showing in the Peter Pan usually results in a spot in the Belmont Stakes on June 9th.

Let's take a closer look at the field and those that should contend in this major prep race.

Peter Pan Stakes Race Favorites

Mark Valeski - was rumoured to start in the Kentucky Derby but bypassed with an eye on later Triple Crown races. Mark Valeski has been good recently with quality second place finishes in his last two races - the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby last time out on April 1st and in the Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes on February 25th. Mark Valeski started his year with an Allowance score on January 13th - all of his 2012 results coming at Fair Grounds. He is certainly due for a win and it may come this week.

The Lumber Guy - has four career starts with three wins - the Grade 2 Jerome Stakes last time out on April 21st, the Miracle Wood Stakes on February 25th and a Maiden Special Weight race in January. His only loss was a truly disappointing one - a fifth in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial on April 7th. The Lumber Guy is an impressive prospect that will almost certainly be a part of the Belmont Stakes field.

Remaining Field Entries

Le Bernardin - will be making his stakes debut after two straight wins - an Allowance race on April 7th and a Maiden Special Weight score on March 10th. He has reportedly been training very well and could be a factor from post 4.
