The Monmouth Cup has attracted a field of six to go in race 10 on Monmouth's Saturday card. Post time is 5:17 PM - right before the main event of the day - the United Nations Stakes. Here is a look at the six entries and what brought them to this Grade 2 event.
2012 Monmouth Cup Stakes Race Favorites
Flat Out - Flat Out has had a lot of hype and races for the first time for legendary trainer Bill Mott but has had disappointing results minus the win at Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Last year's Breeders' Cup Classic favourite finished fifth in that race and was most recently an unflattering 12th at the Grade 3 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream on January 14th followed by a fifth last time out in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap.
Rule - will be making his 2012 debut for trainer Todd Pletcher after an eight month layoff. Last time out was a seventh in the Grade 2 Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap to follow a very respectable third in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga last September. In 15 career starts Rule has five wins including the Grade 3 Delta Jackpot and Sam F. Davis Stakes, two seconds and five third place finishes. Rule is Flat Out's biggest challenge in the Monmouth Cup.

Iselin Stakes.
Cactus Charlie - hasn't tasted victory since an Allowance at Parx in April of last year but has been OK in minor stakes races as of late. In his only start of 2012 Cactus Charlie was third at the Skip Away Stakes at Monmouth and before that had a pair of seconds in October 2011 - the Firethorn and Maryland Million Classic Stakes. Cactus Charlie has never places in graded stakes action however - a fourth in the Grade 3 Philip H. Iselin here and a sixth in the Grade 3 Salvator Mile also here last year.
