Oceanport Stakes at Monmouth Park

Dave Bond | OTB Writer

Las Vegas, NV - The 66th running of the Grade 3 Oceanport Stakes is scheduled for this Sunday, July 29th from Monmouth Park on the Jersey Shore. Horses three years old and upward will be after their portion of the $150,000 purse when they go 1 1/16 miles on Monmouth's turf track.

The Oceanport has attracted a field of 8 for race 12 on Monmouth's busy Sunday card. It acts as the warm-up for the Grade 1 Haskell that is to be run right after. Post time is 5:40 PM. Let's take a look at the eight entries and what brought them to this Grade 3 race.

2012 Oceanport Stakes Race Favorites

Queen'splatekitten - Todd Pletcher trained colt has had some so-so results as of late. Since a win last May in the Marine Stakes at Woodbine, he has a pair of seconds - an Allowance at Keeneland in April and at the Grade 3 Saranac Stakes at Saratoga last September, a fifth in the Queen's Plate at Woodbine last June and more recently a fourth in the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes at Woodbine on May 26th and a third last time out here in the Grade 3 Red Bank Stakes July 4th. Queen'splatekitten is certainly more comfortable on turf making him one to watch on Sunday.

Get Serious - Get Serious had been OK recently - a decent third in the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes followed a trio of sixth place finishes - in the Grade 3 Cliff Hanger and a pair of minor stakes races. But last time out she proved that she could be back to the form that saw her race to an incredible streak of seven wins in nine starts in 2009/2010 - Get Serious recorded a win in the Grade 3 Red Bank Stakes here. She has been money in the past and if you believe that her last result was a sign that she's back to form, Get Serious could be a contender.

Admiral Perry - will make her graded stakes debut after six Allowance Optional Claiming races in 2012 have yielded one win, one second, two thirds, a fifth and an eighth place finish.

Roman Tiger - had won two straight earlier this year - the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes in impressive fashion and the Turf Classic Stakes at Tampa Bay but has struggled of late. Last time out was a seventh in the Sussex Stakes at Delaware Park and before that was another seventh in the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes. She has just 4 wins in 27 career starts.

Glass Art - will be making her stakes debut on Sunday but is coming off two straight Allowance scores on this track. Glass Art has four wins in 11 career starts but makes a huge leap up in competition for the Oceanport.

Crepuscolo - has just six career starts - five in 2012. She has won two of her last three - a Starter Allowance last time out here on July 7th and a Maiden Claiming in April for trainer Juan Serey.

Magnifi Cat - will also be making her stakes debut in the Oceanport but is coming off an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Parx on June 18th. Magnifi Cat has placed in nine of 11 career starts - three wins, three seconds and three third place finishes.

Tune Me In - has placed in just one of her last five starts - a third at the John McSorely Stakes here on June 10th. Sunday marks Tune Me In's graded stakes debut after three wins, seven seconds and four third place finishes in 19 career starts.
