Las Vegas, NV - Aqueduct Racetrack in South Ozone Park, New York will play host to the Grade 3 Long Island Handicap this Saturday, November 9. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will be featured as they go 1 1/2 miles on Aqueduct's dirt track for a purse of $150,000.
The Long Island Handicap has attracted a field of eight older females to go in race 8 on Aqueduct's Saturday card. Post time is 3:43 PM. Here is a brief glance into the credentials of all eight combatants for this Grade 3 stakes.
Anjaz - had seven starts in Britain with three wins and a third place finish before making her North American debut- a fourth in the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes at Gulfstream March 30. Since then Anjaz had an impressive second ahead of Minakashi and behind Tannery in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay Stakes at Belmont Park May 25, she was a disappointing seventh in the Grade 2 New York Stakes and finished a good second last time out at this distance in the listed Waya Stakes at Saratoga August 5. Anjaz looks for her first North American win, is the 118 pound co-highweight and 5-2 morning line favorite and departs from post 2 with Javier Castellano in the saddle.
Strathnaver - H. Graham Motion pupil makes her fifth start on North American soil after two wins and a second place finish in nine starts in Britain. Her American debut was a good one - an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Gulfstream March 16 in record time for 1 3/16 miles on turf and she followed that with another impressive score in the Grade 3 Bewitch Stakes at 18-1 odds at Keeneland April 25. She struggled in two starts after that - a seventh in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay Stakes at Belmont Park in May and an eighth in the Grade 3 Modesty Handicap at Arlington Park in July. Last time she bounced back with as nice win in the minor Lady Baltimore Stakes at Laurel Park September 21. Strathnaver is the lone graded stakes winner in the field, has won 3 of 5 starts in North America and will have Rajiv Maragh in the reins from post 6 as the 3-1 second choice on the morning line.
Aigue Marine - British bred filly and Christophe Clement trainee had two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in eight starts at home before debuting in North America with a close third in the 2012 Long Island Handicap. She has only two starts this year - a seventh in the Grade 3 Orchid Stakes at Gulfstream March 30 followed an Allowance Optional Claiming three weeks earlier. She hasn't been seen since March but is still listed as the 4-1 third choice.
Left a Message - Thomas Proctor trained filly is coming off a second ahead of Angel Terrace in the minor Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes at Keeneland October 20 after a fourth in the minor Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon and a nice win in the minor Flaming Page Stakes at Woodbine in August. She has three wins and four second place finishes in 12 career starts looking to place for the first time in four graded stakes starts. Left a Message is listed at 5-1 odds and lines up in post 5.

Last time out was an impressive Allowance score by four lengths after coming back from 12 lengths back at Keeneland October 16 after a third in her stakes debut - the Omnibus at Monmouth Park August 24. She also placed in four of five starts in Britain before shipping in March of this year. Tabreed stretches out past 1 3/8 miles for the first time, is 6-1 on the morning line and departs from post 4 with Junior Alvarado aboard.
White Rose - Bill Mott trained filly raced in graded stakes company for the first time September 28 and finished seventh in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl at Belmont Park. Before that she placed in seven of eight career starts including a second in her stakes debut - the minor Glens Falls Stakes at Saratoga September 2, an Allowance Optional Claiming score on that same track July 25, a second and a third respectively in Allowance races. She broke maiden in March in her fourth career start and will be out to avenge an ugly performance last time out.
Inimitable Romanee - WH Graham Motion trained mare has six starts this year with two seconds and three third place finishes. She is coming off her worst performance in some time - an eighth in the minor Ticonderoga Stakes at Belmont Park October 19 after placing in four minor stakes starts on that same track this past summer. She makes her graded stakes debut Saturday having won just two of 19 career starts with six seconds and five third place finishes. Inimitable Romanee leaves from the rail Saturday as 15-1 odds.
Sheppard's Pie - has 20 career starts for trainer Jonathan Sheppard but Saturday marks her graded stakes debut. Last time out was a sixth in the minor Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes at Keeneland October 20 after an Allowance score at Presque Isle Downs September 4. She has three wins (all this year), eight seconds and two third place finishes in 20 career starts and enters in sketchy form.
