2013 Seagram Cup Stakes Race Favorites

James Street - is a graded stakes winner (one being the 2011 version of this race) and multiple graded stakes placed and is coming off a nice second in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes July 1 to follow a good third in the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes here May 12. Before that was a second in an Allowance in April and a distant ninth in January in the Grade 3 Colonel E.R. Bradley Handicap in January. He did have a win in the Grade 3 Autumn Stakes on this track in November as well as a pair of thirds in his previous two graded stakes starts at Woodbine. He finished third in this race last year, he beat Alpha Bettor last time out, he has knocked on the door in his last two stakes starts on this track - he could break through Saturday.

Alpha Bettor - has 22 career starts all at Woodbine. He is the defending champion in this race at 23-1 odds but it took until five starts later that he would taste victory again in the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes on this track May 12. This after a pair of fourths in stakes action at the end of 2012 - the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes and the Grade 3 Durham Cup Stakes. Last time out was an OK third in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes behind James Street who is also entered in the Seagram Cup. He will be looking for a repeat win and goes against a lot of his Dominion Day competitors as the most accomplished entries and one of the likely favorites in the race.

Seagram Cup Stakes 2013 | Remaining Field Entries

Awesome Overture - races for just the fifth time for trainer Paul Attard and is coming off his only off-the-board finish - a fifth in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes here July 1. Before that was three starts and three wins - the biggest of which being an Allowance Optional Claiming here June 9. He has been very competitive in his short career and could be the surprise of the Seagram Cup.

Ultimate Destiny - has just one graded stakes start to his credit - a seventh place finish in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby in September but enters the Seagram Cup on a three race win streak in his only three starts of 2013. Last time out was a win in the minor Steady Growth Stakes June 15 to follow a pair of Allowance scores on this track. Ultimate Destiny has five wins, six seconds and a third place finish in 17 career starts for trainer Alec Fehr.

Peyton - raced some big races on this track last year with some unflattering results including a thirteenth in the Queen's Plate, a tenth in the Breeders' Stakes and a sixth in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby. But Peyton had a 2 1/4 length high-priced Allowance score in November and followed that with a good second in the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes here in December. He has just one start in 2013 - an Allowance Optional Claiming score on this track July 1 after 7 1/2 months away.

Any Given Royal - made his stakes debut with a nice second in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby here in September but has struggled since. He ended his 2012 campaign with a fifth in the Grade 3 Commonwealth Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs in November and has three starts in 2013 - a seventh in an Allowance at Keeneland in April, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Woodbine May 25 and a fifth last time out in the Grade 2 King Edward Stakes here June 23. He has just two wins in 15 career starts but has five seconds and four third place finishes.

Patrioticandproud - won the minor Toronto Cup Stakes in July 2012 on this track and went on to an Allowance Optional Claiming score after that on this track as well. He hasn't been great since however. Last time out was an OK third in the Grade 3 Singspeil Stakes here July 7 after a fifth in the Grade 3 Hanshin Cup at Arlington Park May 25 and a sixth in the Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes May 3. He did have a good second on this track in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes November 10 and looked better overall in his last start for trainer Mark Casse.

Perfect Afleet - made his stakes debut in the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes on this track May 12 and finished fourth for the third straight time. He started his year with an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Gulfstream March 9 for his only victory in nearly a year. Last time out was a distant sixth in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes here July 1 in a race that many of his Seagram Cup competitors took place in. Perfect Afleet has three wins, two seconds and a third place finish in 17 career starts.
