Toboggan Stakes 2014 Contenders & Odds

Las Vegas, NV - Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York will be the scene of the Grade 3 Toboggan Stakes on Saturday, February 1. Horses three years old and upward will be featured as they dash six furlongs on Aqueduct's main track for the winner's share of the $150,000 purse.

A field of eight has been confirmed for the Toboggan - race 6 on Aqueduct's Saturday card. Post time is 2:50 PM. Here is a brief look into the past performances of all eight combatants for this Grade 3 stakes.

2014 Toboggan Stakes Race Favorite Entries

Strapping Groom - raced in graded stakes company for the first time in July and finished fifth in the Grade 3 James Marvin here but followed that with a good win in the minor Kid Russell Stakes August 12 and his best ever result - a win in the Grade 1 Forego Stakes at Saratoga August 31 at 15-1 odds. He had a somewhat disappointing fourth in the Grade 3 Bold Ruler at Belmont Park October 26 after a third in the Grade 1 Vosburgh September 28 but has looked better in his last two starts. Last time out was a dominant 6 1/2 length win on this track in the minor Gravesend Handicap December 21 after a good second in the Grade 3 Fall Highweight here November 28. Strapping Groom has nine wins, six seconds and two third place finishes in 26 career starts and enters as 3-5 favorite for the Toboggan. Praetereo - had an Allowance Optional Claiming score here November 8 and followed that with a pair of thirds - both in minor stakes action on this track - the Lord of the Night Stakes last time out December 29 and the Spooky Mulder Stakes two weeks earlier also on this track. This after another third in the minor I'm a Banker Stakes at Belmont Park in October and a second in the Duck Dance Stakes October 6. He also had a sixth in the Grade 2 Kelso September 28. He had concentrated on Allowance Optional Claiming races the first 2/3 of last year for trainer David Jacobson with a win July 7, a second here and a pair of thirds. Praetereo has just five wins, three seconds and nine third place finishes in 30 career starts. He starts from the outside post as the co-favorite.

Candyman E - the third of the David Jacobson trainees in the Toboggan has 20 career starts with nine wins, three seconds and three third place finishes. He enters on a two race win streak - the minor Spooky Mulder Stakes on this track last time out and an Allowance Optional Claiming at Belmont Park October 26. This after a sixth in the Grade 1 Vosburgh and a second in the minor Kid Russell Stakes at Saratoga in August. Candyman E finished fourth in this race in 2012 after four straight wins the summer of 2011. He is a competitive entry who can put wins together in bunches and departs from post 7 at 5-1 odds.

Dads Caps - has just six career starts for trainer Rudy Rodriguez with three wins, a second and a third place finish. Last time out was a second in the minor Spooky Mulder Stakes behind Candyman E here after an Allowance Optional Claiming score on this track in November. He looks for his first stakes win Saturday and is being sent off at 6-1 odds from post 6.

Don Tito - another Rudy Rodriguez trainee will also be looking for his first stakes win Saturday. He enters having won two of his last three starts and three of his last five overall - all Allowance Optional Claiming races - the last being last time out on this track December 28. He has never finished higher than fifth in any one of his five graded stakes starts but looks OK ahead of this weekend. Don Toto is 8-1 on the morning line and lines up in post 2.

Bet the Power - has 28 career starts for trainer John Terranova with 10 wins, nine seconds and a third place finish but races in graded stakes company for the first time Saturday. He does enter in good form however - three wins and three seconds in his last six starts overall. Last time out was a Starter Optional Claiming score here December 11 after a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track in November and a Claiming score in September at Delaware Park. Bet the Power is 12-1 on the morning line and leaves from post 4.

Sensational Sam - won a pair of minor stakes races to start his career but has struggled in stakes action since. In fact Sensational Sam hasn't stepped up in class since June 2011. He enters this weekend having won two of his last three starts and finishing second in the other - that second coming last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming here December 28. This after failing to place in his previous five starts. He has 27 career starts with nine wins, four seconds and two third place finishes but hasn't seen this level of competition in quite some time. Sensational Sam departs from the rail at 15-1 odds Saturday.

Non Stop - is coming off a win in A Starter Allowance on this track January 1 after a third in a Starter Optional Claiming December 11 and a Claiming score at Belmont Park in October. He has six wins, five seconds and a third place finish in 23 career starts. Non Stop is the longest shot in the field at 20-1 odds and leaves from post 3.
