Seagram Cup Stakes 2014 Contenders & Odds

Las Vegas, NV - Woodbine Racetrack in beautiful Toronto, Ontario will host the Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes this Sunday, August 3. Horses three years old and upward will chase the winner's share of the $150,000 purse in this 1 1/16 miles test on Woodbine's turf track.

A field of six have been confirmed for the Seagram Cup - race 8 on Woodbine's Sunday card. Post time is 4:27 PM. Let's take a look into the past performances of all six entries for this Grade 3 stakes.

2014 Seagram Cup Stakes Race Favorite Entries

Alpha Bettor - Sovereign Award winner as Canada's champion older horse of 2013 won this race last year. He has 29 career starts - 28 at Woodbine and is coming off an Allowance score here July 6 which followed an OK third in the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes and another Allowance score May 10. He won the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes to close out his 2013 campaign November 15 after a good second in the Grade 3 Durham Cup October 6 as well. He has placed in eight of his last nine starts and has won two of his last three. As defending champion Alpha Bettor is expected to be near the top again Sunday. Justin Stein rides the 8-5 morning line favorite and 121 pound co-highweight from the inside post.

Sky Captain - Mark Casse trained colt has three starts in 2014 with three wins - all on this track. Last time out was a terrific win over Frac Daddy in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes here July 1 which followed an Allowance Optional Claiming score May 18 and a win in an Allowance April 20 - the results after over a year away from the track. He ended 2013 on a somewhat sour note way back in April with a fifth in the minor Calder Derby which followed a distant tenth in his only other graded stakes action - the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct in March. Sky Captain has looked unstoppable this year and has found a definite affinity for Woodbine. He leaves from post 5 with Patrick Husbands aboard as the 2-1 morning line second choice.

Pender Harbour - Michael DePaulo trainee has two wins and two seconds in four starts this year and is coming off a second in an Allowance July 6 after a minor stakes score - the Steady Growth Stakes June 8 and a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming in May - all on this track. He did finish third in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes in November - the only time he placed in graded stakes action since 2012. Pender Harbour has 29 career starts with 10 wins, six seconds and five third place finishes, has been good this year but will race in graded stakes company for the first time in 2014. He has seven wins on this track and could be a factor. Luis Contreras rides the 3-1 third choice from gate 2 as Pender Harbor looks for his first ever graded stakes win.

His Race to Win - has won four of his last eight starts and three of his last six including an Allowance three back and the Grade 3 Ontario Derby by 2 1/4 lengths in September. His other three results over that span were fifth place finishes including the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes June 1 and the minor Woodchopper Stakes in November at Fair Grounds in November and an OK third last time out in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes July 1 on this track. His Race to Win has had some good results here and will be looking to build on a decent performance last time out. Eurico Rosa Da Silva has the mount from gate 3 at 6-1 on the morning line.

Ultimate Destiny - Sovereign Award finalist for Canada's older male in 2013 had nine starts last year with five wins and three second place finishes. A three race win streak in the Spring ended with a good second behind Alpha Bettor in the 2013 Seagram Cup in the first of three straight second place finishes (the others being minor stakes action). Ultimate Destiny returned to the winner's circle October 20 - in the minor Bunty Lawless Stakes over Pender Harbour here and went on to a fourth in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes on this track in November. He enters having finished third in consecutive starts - an Allowance July 6 and in the minor Steady Growth Stakes June 8 after a win in the minor Sir Barton Stakes here December 4. He was terrific last year on this track and has been trending upward ahead of this weekend. Jesse Campbell gets the call from the outside post at 8-1 odds.

Peyton - raced some big races on this track in 2012 with some unflattering results including a thirteenth in the Queen's Plate, a tenth in the Breeders' Stakes and a sixth in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby. In 2013 Peyton had a fourth in this race and was poor all year before an OK third in the 2013 Valedictory Stakes here in December. He had a sixth in the Grade 3 Eclipse here June 1 of this year, was third in an Allowance here June 15 and was fourth last time out in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes here July 1 - inconsistent as always. David Moran will be in the saddle of the longest shot in the field - 15-1 from post 4.
