2016 Iowa Derby Race Preview at Prairie Meadows

Texas Chrome 2-1 - JR Caldwell trained colt has been impressive so far in his nine race career - five wins and three third place finishes including wins in his first three career starts (two stakes). He finished a decent third last time out in his graded stakes debut - the Grade 3 Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs June 18 after a nice win in the minor Texas Stallion Stakes at Lone Star in May and a third in the minor Bachelor Stakes at Oaklawn Park in April. He also won the minor Governor's Cup Stakes at Zia Park in October. Texas Chrome has been competitive so far and tries for his first graded stakes win from post 3 Friday. Iram Vargas Diego has the mount on the morning line favorite.

American Freedom 5-2 - has won two of three career starts for trainer Bob Baffert - the minor LARC Sir Barton Stakes last time out at Pimlico May 21 and his debut at Santa Anita in April. His only other start was of the graded stakes variety and it resulted in a sixth in the Grade 3 Pat Day Mile at Churchill Downs May 7 - a result that he hopes was the exception, not the rule. American Freedom looks for his first graded stakes score Friday in OK form - as the second betting choice from gate 4.
