2016 Eclipse Stakes Race Preview at Woodbine Racetrack

Are You Kidding Me - defending champion in this race and last year's Sovereign Award winner for champion older male had a nice two race win streak last summer- both graded stakes at Woodbine - the Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes July 19 after his win in the Grade 2 Eclipse Stakes June 7. He has been up and down since - an eighth last time out in the competitive Grade 1 Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland April 19 followed a nice win in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes here November 8, a third in the Grade 3 Durham Cup on this track October 3, a fourth in the minor Presque Isle Mile September 6 and another third in the Grade 2 Sky Classic also at Woodbine. Are You Kidding Me makes his 2016 debut having placed in six of his last eight starts overall and now has six wins, three seconds and three third place finishes in 25 career starts. He looks for the repeat in this race and his fourth graded stakes win in the last 12 months from post 5 with Alan Garcia aboard. Are You Kidding Me has been sensational posting a number of bullet works ahead of this weekend and looks like the one to beat Saturday.

Melmich - Kevin Attard trained gelding has nine wins, five seconds and a third place finish in 20 career starts (all at Woodbine) and enters in terrific form - eight wins in his last 11 starts overall. Last time out was a superb 10 1/4 length win in track record time in the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes here November 29 which followed an Allowance score November 5, a fourth in his only other graded stakes action to date - the Grade 3 Durham Cup Stakes here October 3 and a three race win streak including the minor OLG Elgin Stakes with a field-best 102 Beyer Speed Figure in September. Florida Won - Mark Casse trained colt has 13 career starts with four wins, two seconds and two third place finishes. He hits the track for the first time since a disappointing eighth in the Grade 2 Autumn Stakes here in November which followed a fifth in the Grade 3 Durham Cup in October. Before that was a good two race wins streak - the minor Presque Isle Mile September 6 and the Grade 3 Seagram Cup on this track August 2. He also had a decent second behind Red Rifle in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes here July 1 and a career best effort - a win in the 2014 Grade 3 Ontario Derby on this track. Florida Won hasn't been impressive in his last two starts but has certainly shown form in the past. Patrick Husbands has been tabbed with getting the Mark Casse trainee his third graded stakes win from post 3.

Ami's Holiday - Josie Carroll trained colt broke maiden at first asking and recorded a great win the Grade 3 Grey Stakes at Woodbine October 6, 2013 - his only graded stakes score. He raced all three legs of Canada's Triple Crown in 2014 and placed in all - a win in the Breeders' Stakes here followed a third in the Prince of Wales Stakes and a good second behind Lexie Lou in the Queens's Plate. He hasn't looked great lately however placing in just one of his last six starts overall. Last time out was a fourth in the minor Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay March 12 after a seventh in an Allowance Optional Claiming in July, a sixth in the minor Harlan's Holiday Stakes in December and a third in the minor Labeeb Stakes here in October. Ami's Holiday will be after his first win in 21 months Saturday and enters in sketchy form indeed. Luis Contreras has been tabbed to ride from gate 4.

Breaking Lucky - raced all three legs of last year's Canadian Triple Crown with mixed results. He won the Prince of Wales Stakes at 13-1 odds at Fort Erie July 28 but also had a ninth in the Breeders' Stakes in August on this track and a fifth in the Queen's Plate here July 5. He enters in the heels of three straight third place finishes - the Grade 3 Ben Ali Stakes at Keeneland last time out April 16, the minor Challenger Stakes at Tampa Bay March 12 and the Grade 3 Ontario Derby here September 20. He has placed in four of his last five starts overall and looks for his first graded stakes score Saturday. James McAleney gets the call from the rail.

Peyton - Michael Doyle trained gelding has 40 career starts with five wins, seven seconds and seven third place finishes in 40 career starts. He finished sixth in the 2014 edition of this race and has been OK, mostly against lesser company since - the best result was a third in the Grade 3 Seagram Stakes in August, 2014. He races in stakes company for the first time in nearly a year off a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming May 8 and consecutive thirds in Allowance races here in November. Peyton looks for his first graded stakes score Saturday and to snap a lengthy 19 race losing streak from gate 2 Saturday. Emma-Jayne Wilson rides.
