2016 Nassau Stakes Race Preview at Woodbine Racetrack

Academic - Canada's 2015 Sovereign Award winner for 3 Year Old Filly has 10 career starts with four wins and two second place finishes. Last time out was a disappointing sixth here in the Grade 3 Hendrie Stakes May 8. Before that was a second in the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes here back on October 31 and consecutive wins - the Grade 3 British Columbia Derby at Hastings in September and by a dominant eight lengths in the Grade 3 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park August 15 (both against the boys). She also had a very disappointing DNF in the Queen's Plate July 5 and another two race win streak - the best of which coming in the Woodbine Oaks at 66/1 odds June 14. Academic has won four of her last seven starts and looks good for a huge bounce back this week. Eurico Rosa Da Silva has been tabbed with accomplishing that goal in her turf debut from post 5.

Strut the Course - Canada's 2014 Sovereign Award winner for Older Females - Barbara Minshall trained mare was impressive last summer - two wins and a second place finish including a win in the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes, a second in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron Stakes and a win in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly Stakes July 5 - all results at Woodbine. She also had two stakes wins on this track at the end of 2014 including the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes. She enters off an Allowance Optional Claiming score by 2 1/4 lengths here April 30 which followed two uncharacteristic results - a fifth in the minor Sir Barton Stakes in November and a close fourth in the Grade 1 EP Taylor Stakes in October. Strut the Course now has 10 wins, four seconds and two third place finishes in 24 career starts and is expected to be competitive as usual Sunday. Luis Contreras gets the call.

Uchenna - Irish bred Mark Casse trained filly won the Grade 3 Ontario Matron Stakes July 25 on this track and followed that with a fourth place finish in the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes also here September 13. She hasn't been much better since - an eighth last time out in the minor Sand Spring Stakes at Gulfstream Park February 27 followed a seventh in the Grade 3 Suwannee River Stakes on that track February 6 and an eleventh in the Grade 1 EP Taylor Stakes here in October. Uchenna has just four wins in 17 career starts and enters having failed to place in her last three starts overall. Patrick Husbands will be in charge of Uchenna from gate 2 hoping for her second graded stakes win in her last five starts overall.

Mississippi Delta - Mark Casse trained filly has four wins and a second place finish in eight career starts but has looked pedestrian in the other three. She enters off a respectable second in the Grade 2 Honey Fox Stakes at Gulfstream April 2 which followed an Allowance score March 6, a DNF in the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen Stakes here in October, a seventh in the Grade 2 Lake George Stakes at Saratoga in July and three straight wins including the minor Alywow Stakes and Glorious Song Stakes at Woodbine. Mississippi Delta will be after her first ever graded stakes win Sunday and third stakes score from the rail with Jermaine Bridgmohan aboard.

Lexie Lou - Sovereign Award 2014 Horse of the Year, Champion Grass Mare and Champion 3 Year Old Filly won the Woodbine Oaks that year along with Canada's biggest race - over the boys in the Queen's Plate and the minor Wonder Where Stakes. She also posted a win in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes that year and a second in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby to end 2014. She had just one start in 2015 - a third in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita in January and was out of racing for nearly one full year. Lexie Lou returned in January, 2016 and finished third in an Allowance Optional Claiming which was followed by a sixth in the Grade 3 Endeavour Stakes in February and a third behind Strut the Course and Moon Rainbow last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track in April. Lexie Lou searches for her first win in 19 months Sunday and will have Patrick Husbands in the saddle from gate 6.

London Tower - Steve Owens trained filly has placed in eight of 10 career starts - four wins, two seconds and two third place finishes - all on this track. She won the minor Ontario Lassie Stakes in November, 2014 and minor Fury Stakes last May and went on to a second in the Woodbine Oaks, a third in the minor Bison City Stakes July 12 and a nice win in the minor Eternal Search Stakes July 29. London Tower has failed to place in her last two starts however - a fifth last time out in an Allowance May 1 followed a fourth in the minor La Prevoyante Stakes in September and a respectable second in her only graded stakes action to date - the Grade 3 Ontario Colleen Stakes in August. London Tower had been a factor in every start before her last two and hopes to return to that terrific form from post 9. Gary Boulanger has the mount.

Moon Rainbow - lightly raced Malcolm Pierce trained filly has three wins and two seconds in six career starts - all on this track. She enters off a second behind Strut the Course in an Allowance April 30 after a win in a similar race November 13, a second in the minor Carotene Stakes October 12 and an Allowance win in August. Moon Rainbow looks for first stakes score and enters in decent form from gate 8 with Eurico Rosa Da Silva in the saddle.

Stormy Victoria - Christophe Clement trained French bred filly had two wins in eight career starts at home but failed to place in her last four - all stakes races. She returned from seven months away from the track and made her North American debut April 29 and promptly won an Allowance Optional Claiming at Belmont Park. Stormy Victoria has been OK in her career and will be chasing her first stakes score from gate 4 Sunday. Alan Garcia gets the call.

Dyna's Recoleta - Roger Attfield trained filly makes her graded stakes debut Sunday having posted two wins, a second and a third place finish in 10 career starts. Last time out was an Allowance score at Keeneland April 24 after a fifth in the minor Carotene Stakes here in October and a third in the minor La Longrette Stakes on this track in September. Dyna's Recoleta steps up off a career best effort but looks overmatched in this one. Emma-Jayne Wilson has been tabbed to ride from post 3.

Fuscetta - German bred Roger Attfield trained filly has seven career starts with a win, a second and a third place finish. She won a stakes race at home in her second career start and has been OK since. Her first North American start came three starts back - a tenth in an Allowance in July and has two starts since - a third in an Allowance in August and a second last time out in another Allowance at Keeneland April 17. Fuscetta hopes for her first stakes/group score Sunday and has looked OK in the leadup to this race. David Moran rides from post 7.
