2017 Sheepshead Bay Stakes Entries at Belmont Park

Suffused - Bill Mott trained British bred mare has placed in 12 of 16 career starts - seven wins, four seconds and a third place finish. She was OK in Europe but has stepped up her game since arriving in North America. Last time out was a terrific five length win in the G3 The Very One Stakes at Gulfstream March 4 after another win in the G3 La Prevoyante Stakes here January 28. That followed a respectable second in the G1 EP Taylor Stakes at Woodbine October 16, a good win in the G3 Glens Falls Stakes at Saratoga September 3, a second in the G3 Fasig-Tipton Waya Stakes on that track August 6, a win in the minor Belmont Coronation Invitational Stakes in June and a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming last May. Suffused has four wins and two seconds in her last six starts overall and is expected to be competitive yet again Saturday. Kendrick Carmouche will be in the saddle from gate 6.

Zipessa - has 10 career starts for trainer Michael Stidham with four wins, a second and two third place finishes. Last time out was an OK fifth in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf which followed a respectable second in the G1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita October 1, an OK third in the G1 Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington August 13, a good win in the G3 Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes at Parx July 4 and a third in the G3 Mint Julep Stakes at Churchill Downs June 11. She also had a fourth in the G2 Churchill Downs Turf Mile May 7, an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Fair Grounds last March and an eighth in the G1 Del Mar Oaks last August. Zipessa has been decent lately placing in four of her last five starts and hopes for her second graded stakes score in her last five starts overall. Mitchell Murrill has been tabbed to ride from gate 2.

Sea Calisi - defending champion - French bred Group 2 winner, Chad Brown trained filly has placed in 10 of 12 career starts - four wins, two seconds and four third place finishes. She made her North American debut last May and won the Sheepshead Bay Stakes here and went on to a second in the G2 New York Stakes on this track in June, another good win in the G1 Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington August 13 and an OK third in the G1 Flower Bowl Stakes at Belmont Park October 8. Last time out was a slight step back - a seventh in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. At home good results included consecutive respectable thirds including a Group 3 at Longchamp last September and that Group 2 score - the Prix de Malleret at Saint Cloud in June, 2015. Sea Calisi has placed in four of five North American starts and will be after a bounceback performance from the outside post 7. Irad Ortiz has been tabbed to ride.

Apple Betty - Irish bred Shug McGaughey trained filly has three wins, a second and three thirds in eight career starts. She won a minor stakes race at Toulouse in April and has been decent since. Last time out was a respectable North American debut - a second in the G3 Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes at Keeneland October 23 which followed a fourth in a Group 2 race at Baden Baden Germany and a pair of thirds in Group 3 races in France - the last coming in the Morocco Cup in July. Apple Betty looked decent in Europe and carried that momentum into her start last time out. Apple Betty shoots for a first ever graded stakes/Group stakes win in his first start since October - from post 3 Saturday with Paco Lopez in the reins.

Voila La Victoire - Irish bred Thomas Albertrani trained mare has just three wins, four seconds and five third place finishes in 22 career starts. She makes her stakes debut Saturday having placed in her last seven starts - all Claiming races. Last time out was a second at Gulfstream April 5 after a win, a third, a second and consecutive runner-up finishes this past winter. Voila La Victoire has been decent against lesser company and hopes it translates in her major step up in competition. Christopher DeCarlo gets the call from post 5.

Guilty Twelve - Graham Motion trained mare has two wins and two seconds in her eight career starts. She started her career in Europe where a second in her debut was the best result and has been OK since shipping. Last time out was a fifth in the minor Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon back on September 15 after an Allowance score at Saratoga July 28, a second in a similar race at Delaware Park in July and a maiden score at Presque Isle Downs in June. Guilty Twelve has placed in three of her last four starts overall and will race in graded stakes company for the first time Saturday. Manuel Franco has been tabbed to ride from gate 4.

Achnaha - George Weaver trained mare has just two wins in 24 career starts to go along with six seconds and five third place finishes. Last time out was a disappointing eighth in the G3 Long Island Handicap at Aqueduct November 6 after a fifth in the G3 Glens Falls Stakes at Saratoga September 3, an OK third in the G3 Waya Stakes at Saratoga in August, a second in the minor Belmont Coronation Invitational here June 9 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score on this track June 4. Before that was a fifth in the G3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland April 29, 2016 and a third in the G3 Orchid Stakes four weeks prior to that.
