2017 Torrey Pines Stakes Entries at Del Mar Race Track

Paradise Woods 7-5

Has just four starts for trainer Richard Mandella with two wins and a second-place finish. She was last seen back on May 5 finishing a disappointing eleventh as favorite in the G1 Kentucky Oaks which followed a terrific record-breaking, 11 ¾ win in the G1 Santa Anita Oaks April 8, a maiden score on that track March 11 and a second in her debut. Paradise Woods was very good in her first three starts and will be out to improve her Kentucky Oaks result was the exception, not the rule. Flavien Prat has been tabbed to ride the only graded winner in the field and morning line favorite from the rail.

Zapperkat 3-1

Richard Baltas trained filly has two wins and a third-place finish in her four career starts. Last time out was a nice Allowance Optional Claiming score at Santa Anita May 4 after a fifth in a similar race on that track in March and a respectable third in the G1 Chandelier Stakes at Santa Anita in October. Zapperkat has been OK so far in her career and hopes for a first stakes win from post 3 Sunday. Norberto Arroyo Jr. gets the call on the morning line second choice.

Mistressofthenight 6-1

Richard Baltas trained filly has two wins and a third-place finish in nine career starts. She finally broke maiden by 4 1/4 lengths in her fifth career start January 14 and has been up and down since. Last time out was an Allowance Optional Claiming score at this distance here August 9 which followed a sixth in a similar race at Santa Anita July 2, a firth in the minor Santa Paula Stakes April 9 and a fourth in her stakes debut - G3 Santa Ysabel Stakes at Santa Anita March 4. Mistressofthenight has been largely underwhelming in stakes company but hopes to change all of that around from post 5 Sunday. Rafael Bejarano has the mount on the morning line third choice.

Bernina Star 8-1

Has placed in seven of 11 career starts for trainer James Cassidy - two wins, two seconds and three third place finishes. Last time out was an Allowance Optional Claiming score here July 29 which followed a fifth in a similar race at Santa Anita May 4 and a sixth in her only graded stakes action so far - the G1 Santa Anita Oaks April 8. Before that was a fourth in the minor China Doll Stakes March 11, a maiden score February 20, a second and a fourth respectively in a pair of MSW - all four at Santa Anita. Bernina Star has been up and down in her career but hopes for a major breakthrough Sunday. Santiago Gonzalez is scheduled to ride from post 7.

Delitefull Lady 10-1

Will hit the track for just the fourth time for trainer Richard Baltas having posted a win and a third-place finish so far. She steps into stakes company for the first time Sunday off a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming on this track July 29 after a maiden score at Santa Anita in January and a third in his first start - on this track in November. Delitefull Lady has been just OK so far but hopes to make a name for herself from gate 4 Sunday. Corey Nakatani will be in the saddle from gate 4.

Helen Hillary 10-1

Phil D'Amato trained filly has a win and a second-place finish in her four career starts. She won her career debut March 25 and went on to a fifth in her only stakes action to date - the G3 Senorita Stakes May 6. She followed that with an OK second in an Allowance Optional Claiming June 10 and was most recently a very disappointing eighth in an Allowance Optional Claiming race on this track July 21. Helen Hillary attempts to bounce back off a career-worst effort and for a first stakes win from gate 6 Sunday with Joe Talamo aboard.

Munny Spunt 10-1

Has placed in seven of 12 career starts for trainer Doug O'Neill - four wins and three runner-up finishes. She made her stakes debut last time out and finished fourth in the G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap on this track August 13 which followed a Claiming score at this distance on this track July 29, a second in a Claiming at Santa Anita June 30 and two more Claiming scores at Santa Anita early in the summer. Munny Spunt has been good against lesser company but looked a tad out of place in her step up last time out. She chases a breakthrough performance Sunday from the outside gate 8 with Drayden Van Dyke guiding her.

Chocolate Coated 15-1

Has placed in all three career starts for trainer Neil French - one win, one second and one third-place finish. She makes her stakes debut Sunday off a maiden score by an impressive 4 1/4 lengths at this distance on this track August 3 which followed a second and a third respectively to start her career. Chocolate Coated has improved every time out and tries to keep the momentum going with Gary Stevens in the irons from gate 2.
