2017 San Francisco Mile Stakes Entries at Golden Gate Fields

Alert Bay - defending champion in this race won four straight turf races in 2014/2015 including the G3 British Columbia Derby and BC Premier's Handicap at Hastings, the G2 Mathis Brothers Mile at Santa Anita and California Cup in January, 2014. He also won the G2 City of Hope Miles at Santa Anita in September, 2015. He has been OK in his last four starts - an Allowance score after coming back from 13 lengths down last time out on this track April 2 followed eight months away, a fourth in the G3 Longacres Mile August 14 and another fourth in the minor California Dreamin' Stakes at Del Mar July 24. Before that was a second in the minor Crystal Water Stakes at Santa Anita June 11 and a good win in the G3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate April 30. Alert Bay has placed in just one of his last three starts overall but a win last time out should have him confident for the repeat. Juan Hernandez is scheduled to ride from gate 6.

G.G Ryder - won this race in 2015 (a race he followed with a nice win in the 2015 G3 All American Stakes) and finished fifth last year. He has been decent ahead of this year's edition of the San Francisco Mile as well. He enters having placed in his last five starts - a third behind Alert Bay and Star Student in an Allowance April 2 followed an Allowance score February 26 and consecutive runner-up finishes - an Allowance in January and the G3 Berkeley Handicap November 26 - all on this track. Before that was a second in the minor Bull Dog Handicap here in October. He failed to place in his previous three starts and now has 12 wins, eight seconds and three third place finishes in 24 career starts. G.G. Ryder has been a factor in every race the last six months and will be out to rediscover his 2015 form from the rail with Irving Orozco in the reins.

Stryker Phd - has been good the last three years - 17 starts with nine wins, a second and three third place finishes. He enters off consecutive fourths in Allowance races on this track - the last being April 2. Before that was a third in a similar race and consecutive good wins - the G3 Berkeley Handicap here in November and the minor Muckleshoot Tribal Classic at Emerald Downs in August - a race he has won two straight years during a steak of four straight wins. He won the 2014 and 2015 Longacres mile as well. Stryker Phd knows this track well and hopes to snap a three race win streak from gate 2. William Antongeorgi III gets the call.

Star Student - Dan Markle trained gelding has 30 career starts with seven wins, 10 seconds and four third place finishes. He hasn't been great in graded stakes company - an eighth in the G3 Longacres Mile in August followed a seventh in the G3 All American Stakes on this track last May. He has been OK against lesser company lately however - a second behind Alert Bay in a local prep for this race - an Allowance last time out April 2 followed a fourth in a similar race March 17 and a decent second in the minor Lost in the Fog Stakes February 10 - all on this track. Star Student tries to snap a five race losing streak Saturday when he leaves from the outside post 7 with Julien Couton guiding him.

He arrives off a third in the minor Let It Ride Stakes at Del Mar November 12 which followed a three race win streak including an Allowance Optional Claiming here October 22 and an Allowance on this track in September. Camino Del Pariaso has been competitive in the last eight months and shoots for a first stakes score from post 5 with Ricardo Gonzalez in the irons.
