2017 Bayakoa Handicap Entries at Los Alamitos
Champagne Room
Eclipse Award winner for 2016 Champion 2-Year-Old Filly has three wins, a second and two third place finishes in eight career starts for trainer Peter Eurton. Last time out was a sixth after leading but fading in the Breeders' Cup Distaff November 3 (she posted a career-best 103 BIIS Speed Rating in that race however). Before that was a gate-to-wire 3 3/4 length win in the listed Remington Park Oaks September 24, almost eight months away, a third in the G2 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita February 5 and a terrific career-defining win at 33-1 odds in the 2016 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies last November. She also posted a fourth in the G1 Chandelier Stakes at Del Mar October 1, 2015, an OK third, a nose back in the 2016 G1 Del Mar Debutante Stakes and an uber-successful stakes debut - a win by 1 1/4 lengths in the G2 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar last August 6. The accomplished Champagne Room has been decent for sure but will be in search of a strong bounce back off a career-worst finish from gate 2. Mario Gutierrez rides.
Constellation
Has placed in 11 of 13 career starts for trainer Bob Baffert - five wins, five seconds and a third-place finish. She finished third in the G1 Spinaway Stakes in September, 2015 - her second career start and went on to a second in the G2 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park a month later. She has won four of 10 starts since - the best of which was the G1 La Brea Stakes at 12-1 odds December 26. The other wins include the minor City of Phoenix Stakes at Turf Paradise November 12, 2016, the minor Ruthless Stakes January 17, 2016 and the minor Furlough Stakes in November, 2015. She enters off an eleventh after being eased and walked off in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint November 4 which followed four straight runner-up finishes - the G3 Rancho Bernardo Stakes at Del Mar August 13, the G2 Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos July 6, in the G1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland April 8 and as odds-on favorite in the G3 Las Flores Stakes at Santa Anita March 5. Constellation had been good the last 21 months before last time out (four wins and four seconds in 11 starts) and will try to bounce back off an underwhelming effort from post 5. Drayden Van Dyke has the mount.
Madame Stripes
Argentinean bred Neil Drysdale trained mare has placed in 11 of 15 career starts - three wins, seven seconds and a third-place finish. She finished second in a couple of Group 1 stakes races at home in 2015 and has been decent since shipping. An ugly eleventh last time out however in the G2 Goldikova Stakes at Del Mar November 4 followed a second in the minor Swingtime Stakes at Santa Anita October 7 and a third in the G2 John C Mabee Stakes at Del Mar September 2. Before that was a good win in the minor Osunitas Stakes on that track July 21 and three straight runner-up finishes including the G3 Wilshire Stakes July 1 and a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming races. Madame Stripes had been competitive before last time out and hopes to place for the seventh time in her last eight starts - from gate 4 with Joe Talamo aboard.
Shenandoah Queen
John Sadler trained mare has hit the board in eight of 12 career starts - five wins, a second and two third-place finishes. She made her graded stakes debut last time out and finished sixth in the G2 Chilukki Stakes at Churchill Downs November 4 after a nice win with a career-best 93 Beyer Speed Figure in the restricted Tranquility Lake Stakes at Del Mar August 25, a fifth in an Allowance Optional Claiming on that track August 2, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream and a three-race win streak - all Allowance races. Shenandoah Queen has been good against lesser company and hopes to bounce back of an substandard graded stakes debut when she leaves from post 7 with Victor Espinoza guiding her.
Majestic Heat
Richard Mandella trained mare made her stakes debut last August 15, 2015 and finished fifth in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks and had a fourth in the G3 Autumn Miss Stakes that year. She went on to a pair of wins including the minor Solana Beach Stakes at Del Mar last August. Majestic Heat ended her 2016 campaign with a sixth in last year's G1 Rodeo Drive and a fourth in the G2 Goldikova Stakes in November before being sent to the sidelines for nine months. She has been up and down in four starts in 2017 - a 3 1/4 length win last time out in the minor Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar November 12 followed consecutive sixths - the G2 Goldikova Stakes at Del Mar November 4 and the G1 Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita September 30. Majestic Heat now has 15 career starts with six wins and a second-place finish and will chase a first graded stakes score from post 3 Sunday. Mike Smith will be in the saddle.
Pacific Wind
Lightly raced filly hit the track for just the seventh time for trainer Peter Eurton having posted two wins, a second and two third-place finishes so far. Last time out was a 1 3/4 length Allowance Optional Claiming score with a career-best 98 BRIS Speed Rating at Santa Anita October 21 which followed an ugly tenth in the G1 Del Mar Oaks August 19 and a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming here July 21. Before that were consecutive thirds - the G2 Honeymoon Stakes at Santa Anita June 17 and behind Sircat Sally and Beau Recall in the G3 Senorita Stakes there May 6 and a win at first asking - at Santa Anita. Pacific Wind has been competitive so far in all but one start and hopes for a first stakes score from gate 6 Sunday. Rafael Bejarano will be in the saddle.
Street Surrender
Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly has six wins in her 18 career starts to go along with three seconds and a third-place finish. She enters off an underwhelming graded stakes debut - an eighth in the G2 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at Del Mar November 3. Before that was a fourth in the minor Tranquility Stakes August 25, a sixth in the minor Osunitas Stakes July 21 and a win in the listed Southern Truce Stakes at Santa Anita June 25. She recorded consecutive seconds in a pair minor stakes races to start her summer and also had a three-race win streak in Allowance races to start her 2017 campaign. Street Surrender has been competitive in the past but will be out for a first graded stakes score and an end to a three-race span in which she has failed to hit the board. Evin Roman gets the call from the rail.
Bernina Star
Has placed in nine of 14 career starts for trainer James Cassidy - two wins, two seconds and five third-place finishes. Last time out was a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Del Mar November 5 after a fourth in a similar race at Santa Anita October 19 and a third in the G3 Torrey Pines Stakes at Del Mat August 27. Before that was Allowance Optional Claiming score at Del Mar July 29, a fifth in a similar race at Santa Anita May 4 and a sixth in her only other graded stakes action so far - the G1 Santa Anita Oaks April 8. Bernina Star has been just OK so far in her career and hopes for a career-defining win from the outside gate 8. Santiago Gonzalez will be in the irons.
