Following a massive upset in the Seabiscuit Handicap Saturday at Del Mar, the track’s Early Pick Five wager took on a whole new shine looking ahead to Sunday’s closing-day program for the Bing Crosby Season.

When Savio-Cannon Thoroughbreds’ Call Sign Seven came scooting up the fence in the mile and one-sixteenth turf test for a half-length tally, the lights flashed and the bells rang for longshot and combination-bet players. The 3-year-old colt returned $139 for $2 as the longest price in the field and triggered a $329,773 carryover in the 50-cent wager, meaning tomorrow’s target in the first five races on the card – with its mandatory payout – figures to climb over the $2-million mark.

The largest 50-cent Pick Five payout in track history was $750,793.80 on August 30, 2020.

First post Sunday at the seaside track goes at 12:30 p.m.
