Breeders’ Cup Sprint Quotes

December 10, 2019

Maria Borell (trainer, Runhappy, 1st) – “Oh my God, oh my God. I was worried, I'm not going to lie. Track record, really? Oh my God. I am just not used to him not going to the lead like that. I was nervous. That is the first time he stalked off the pace like that. I was nervous, but he did it. I can't believe it.”

Edgar Prado (jockey, Runhappy, 1st) – “From the first time I got on this horse, I knew he was special. He keeps getting better and better. For me, he’s second to Barbaro. Early in the race when we were further back, we were worried about him (taking) kick back, but he just did fine and we started picking up horses. And, then he really turned it on.”

Jorge Navarro (trainer, Private Zone, 2nd) – “How much can you ask? Nobody thought he was that fast. Only me. I told (stable manager) Rene Douglas, ‘You’re going to be surprised when he comes out of that gate.’ You can’t ask anything more from the horse. He lost to a nice horse.”

Martin Pedroza (jockey, Private Zone, 2nd) – “I was sitting right off the horse on the lead. The rider on (Holy Boss) was chirping at his horse and then my horse got a little keen on me. Coming down the lane, I hit him left-handed and he spooked a little bit at the first wire. Then I changed sticks right back. He ran hard. He's the best in my book. I want to run against (Runhappy) one more time. Next time, we'll beat him.”

Guadalupe Preciado (trainer, Favorite Tale, 3rd) – “He ran okay. We can't ask for better than what he did. We're happy. Those are two nice horses that finished ahead of him.”

Javier Castellano (jockey, Favorite Tale, 3rd) – “I had the perfect trip. That was what we were looking for today. There was a lot of speed in the race. We just wanted to sit behind the speed and just go from there. He closed very well today. I was very satisfied with the way he did it today.”

Ricardo Santana Jr. (jockey, Holy Boss, 4th) – “Going to the front wasn’t really the plan. but he broke very sharp. He was ready to run today."

This was the first Breeders’ Cup win for trainer Maria Borell with her first starter and the fifth for jockey Edgar Prado.
