Fall Turf Festival Gets Under Way at Gulfstream Park West

December 10, 2019

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – The Fall Turf Festival at Gulfstream Park West got under way Saturday under blue skies following a three-day postponement prompted by the threat of Hurricane Matthew.

Unaffected by the Category 4 storm that stayed offshore, Gulfstream Park offered a 10-race card highlighted by a five-furlong turf allowance won by Arborville. The Rasharn Creque-trained 7-year-old fired fresh from a four-month layoff, chasing a sharp pace set by Zeus Odin into deep stretch before drawing clear by a half length. Sent to post as the 7-2 second choice in the featured eighth race, Arborville ran the distance in 57.38 seconds. Zeus Odin, a 45-1 outsider ridden by Samy Camacho, finished 1 1/2 lengths ahead of Final Encore, the 9-5 favorite who made a belated bid under Tyler Gaffalione.

Jockey Emisael Jaramillo got off to a fast start by riding three winners on the opening-day card, scoring aboard Little United ($3.20 ) in the second, Flashing Cat ($8.20) in the fifth and Seven of Jack ($8) in the sixth.

The Gulfstream Park meet continues Sunday with a 10-race program. In the featured eighth race, a 7 ½-furlong optional claiming allowance for Florida-breds on turf, Little Nick V returns to the course over which he scored a victory in the $100,000 Juvenile Turf Stakes for state-breds last November. The Carlo Vaccarezza-trained 3-year-old finished off the board after a troubled start in his return from a nine-month layoff Sept. 11 at Gulfstream. Emisael Jaramillo has the mount aboard the son of Colonel John. Whisper Onthe Wind, a seasoned veteran turf performer, rates as the horse to beat, boasting a career record with 11 wins, including two over the Gulfstream Park West turf.

Sunday’s 20-cent Rainbow 6 sequence will span Races 5-10. The popular multi-race wager was solved Sunday, when a single ticket with all six winners was worth $8,669.22.
