Caesars Entertainment raised the stakes on entertainment and gaming in Central Indiana with the official unveiling of the newly-branded Horseshoe Indianapolis Racing & Casino.
Horseshoe Indianapolis, formerly known as Indiana Grand and Indiana Downs, offers the only live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana and you can watch and wager on all the action with OffTrackBetting.com (OTB).
Horseshoe Indianapolis, located 20 minutes southeast of Indianapolis, is a racino that boasts the Grand Buffet, various other restaurants, gift shops and entertainment venues alongside the race track and casino as part of its 233,000 square foot plot. There are 2,300 slot machines and a poker room and was rebuilt at a cost of in excess of $250million.
Horseshoe Indianapolis began a significant enhancement and expansion to the property in April 2021, bringing nearly 25,000 square feet of new gaming space, including a live World Series of Poker Room with 20 tables.
In 2021 a 50-room dormitory for backstretch workers that care for the horses on the grounds was added, and in 2022 they constructed a winterized barn with 105 stalls will be ready for horses in March. All the upgrades are geared towards trying to keep horses on the grounds during the offseason.
2021-2022 was the first winter the track remained open for training in the offseason, and 300 to 350 horses remained.
The idea to stay open for training during the winter months stems from the ongoing competition for horses in the racing world. With the U.S. foal crop decreasing every year, horse inventory, to maintain or increase field size, is of the utmost importance. Horses based in Indiana have traditionally wintered in places like Turfway Park (Kentucky), Oaklawn Park (Arkansas), Fair Grounds (Louisiana), and Tampa Bay Downs (Florida) - and sometimes they don't make their way back.
Originally opened in 2002 as Indiana Downs and changed its name to Indiana Grand Race Course in 2014.
Horseshoe Indianapolis also hosts the Grade 3, Indiana Derby, Indiana's richest race!
Live racing is conducted at 2:30 p.m. EDT Monday through Wednesday with Thursday post times set for 3:30 p.m.
