Vanity Handicap 2013 at Hollywood Park
Las Vegas, NV - Betfair Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California will host the 72nd edition of the Grade 1 Vanity Handicap this Saturday, June 15. Fillies and mares three years old and upward will take to the track and run 1 1/8 miles for a purse of $250,000.
The Vanity Handicap will feature a strong group of six females for race 9 on Hollywood Park's Saturday card. Post time is 5:00 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all six entries for this important and competitive Grade 1 stakes.
2013 Vanity Handicap Race Favorites
Open Water - She was an impressive second in her turf debut in the Grade 2 San Clemente at Del Mar on July 22 and a game third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks on August 18. Before a fifth in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss and another fifth in the Grade 1 Garden City Stakes at Belmont September 15, she ended 2012 with a very good second in the Grade 2 Bayakoa behind Lady of Fifty at Hollywood Park December 8. She was sixth in her first start of 2013 - the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita January 20 and followed that with a terrific win last time out in the Grade 2 Marjorie L. Everett Handicap May 18 on this very track at 10-1 odds. If successful Saturday, Open Water would be the first horse to win both the Everett - which was called the Milady Handicap prior to 2012 - and the Vanity since Zenyatta in 2009.
Lady of Fifty - Jerry Hollendorfer filly has six wins, four seconds and a third place finish in 15 career starts. She had an OK third in the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes January 16 after a disappointing fourth as favorite in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes January 20, a relatively easy win in the competitive Grade 2 Bayakoa at Hollywood Park by 3 1/4 lengths December 8 and a win in the minor Palm Springs Handicap at Santa Anita November 1. Last time out was a good second as 17-10 favorite behind Open Water in the Grade 2 Marjorie L. Everett Handicap May 18 at Hollywood Park. She looked great in the winter and will be looking for her first win of 2013 Saturday.

More Chocolate - John Sadler trained More Chocolate made her stakes debut and finished a very pleasant third in the Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel Stakes December 30 after six career starts produced two wins and a second place finish for trainer John Sadler. She a very nice win in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes by two lengths over the talented Book Review January 20 and followed that with another good result - a second in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Stakes March 16. Last time out was a tepid fifth in the Grade 2 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs May 3. More Chocolate now has three wins, two seconds and a third place finish in 10 career starts. Saturday marks More Chocolate's first start on synthetic.

Esentepe - Irish bred filly and Jerry Hollendorfer trainee had two wins, three seconds and six third place finishes in 16 starts overseas before shipping to North America where she has four starts resulting including a good win last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Hollywood Park May 9 as 2-5 favorite, an OK fourth in the Grade 3 Wilshire Handicap April 28, a second in an Allowance March 29 and a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming March 14 - both results at Santa Anita.
Royal Tiger - Mark Glatt trained mare makes her stakes debut Saturday having recorded two wins and two third place finishes in five career starts. Last time out was an impressive win in an Allowance Optional Claiming here June 2 after a third in a similar race on that same track April 26. She makes a huge step up in competition Saturday. She's won half of her four races over Cushion Track and was third in her two defeats.
Byrama - was decent in 2012 with three wins, three seconds and two third place finishes in 10 starts. She was an OK third as favorite in the Grade 3 Ken Maddy Stakes October 20 behind Broken Dreams and Kindle to follow a win in the minor Unzip Me Stakes September 29. She has four starts in 2013 - a good second just ahead of Jamaican Smoke in the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland April 13 was her best result this year after an OK third in the Grade 2 Buena Vista Stakes at Santa Anita, another third as favorite in the minor Wishing Well Stakes February 10 and a disappointing fourth in the competitive Grade 2 Monrovia Stakes January 6. Last time out was a sixth in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs May 4. Byrama has placed in six of her last eight starts but has just one minor stakes score to show for it
