2014 La Canada Stakes Race Favorite Entries

Fiftyshadesofhay - Bob Baffert trained filly has 13 career starts. She had a very nice second behind Beholder in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes March 2 and she won the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel by 5 3/4 lengths last January 26 on this track in her graded stakes debut with an impressive Beyer speed figure of 90. She was third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks April 6 also behind Beholder and had a nice two race win streak last year - the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico May 17 and in the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks June 29 and has looked good in three starts since. Last time out was second as even-money favorite in the Grade 2 Bayakoa at Hollywood Park December 7 after a third in the Grade 2 Indiana Oaks and a second in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes in August. She has placed in her last eight graded stakes starts - no reason to think differently about this weekend. A little added motivation in the form of Broken Sword who beat her last time out should help Fiftyshadesofhay rebound. Mike Smith has the mount.

Broken Sword - Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly had a terrific end to her 2013 campaign - a win last time out by 4 1/4 lengths with a career best 103 Beyer Speed Figure in the Grade 2 Bayakoa Stakes at 8-1 odds at Hollywood Park December 7 followed and Allowance Optional Claiming score at Golden Gate November 10. This after alternating fifths and thirds in her previous five starts. She has three wins and three seconds in eight career starts and enters in terrific form. Rafael Bejarano gets the call Sunday in Broken Sword's first start at Santa Anita and just her second start on dirt.

La Canada Stakes 2014 | Remaining Contenders

Let Faith Arise - Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly has four wins and a third place finish in seven career starts but is coming off a career worst performance - a close eighth in her graded stakes debut - the Senator Ken Maddy here November 2. Before that was three wins in four starts - the best being a win in the California Wine Stakes in her stakes debut. She has been successful in sprint races but stretches out for the La Canada.

Ondine - has hit the board in eight all eight career starts (3 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds) for trainer Bob Baffert including last time out - a win in the Beverley J. Lewis Stakes at Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex in September - her first stakes score. She has just one graded stakes start - a third in the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks in June but her win last time out served notice that she is ready for another step up. She has won two of three career starts at this distance.

Last time out was a sixth in the Grade 2 Bayakoa Stakes at Hollywood Park December 7 after eight months away.

Rathbaun - races in stakes company for the first time Sunday for trainer Peter Miller but is coming off one of two career wins - an Allowance Optional Claiming at Hollywood Park December 12 after a second in a similar race at Golden Gate in November.
