Las Vegas, NV - The Grade 2 La Canada Stakes is on tap for this Sunday, January 19 from Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. Four year old fillies will take to Santa Anita's dirt track and go 1 1/16 miles for the winner's share of the $200,000 purse.
The La Canada Stakes has attracted a field of seven older females to go in race 8 on Santa Anita's Sunday card. Post time is 4:00 PM. Here is a brief look into the past performances of all seven combatants for this Grade 2 stakes.
Fiftyshadesofhay - Bob Baffert trained filly has 13 career starts. She had a very nice second behind Beholder in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes March 2 and she won the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel by 5 3/4 lengths last January 26 on this track in her graded stakes debut with an impressive Beyer speed figure of 90. She was third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks April 6 also behind Beholder and had a nice two race win streak last year - the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico May 17 and in the Grade 3 Iowa Oaks June 29 and has looked good in three starts since. Last time out was second as even-money favorite in the Grade 2 Bayakoa at Hollywood Park December 7 after a third in the Grade 2 Indiana Oaks and a second in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes in August. She has placed in her last eight graded stakes starts - no reason to think differently about this weekend. A little added motivation in the form of Broken Sword who beat her last time out should help Fiftyshadesofhay rebound. Mike Smith has the mount.
Broken Sword - Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly had a terrific end to her 2013 campaign - a win last time out by 4 1/4 lengths with a career best 103 Beyer Speed Figure in the Grade 2 Bayakoa Stakes at 8-1 odds at Hollywood Park December 7 followed and Allowance Optional Claiming score at Golden Gate November 10. This after alternating fifths and thirds in her previous five starts. She has three wins and three seconds in eight career starts and enters in terrific form. Rafael Bejarano gets the call Sunday in Broken Sword's first start at Santa Anita and just her second start on dirt.
Let Faith Arise - Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly has four wins and a third place finish in seven career starts but is coming off a career worst performance - a close eighth in her graded stakes debut - the Senator Ken Maddy here November 2. Before that was three wins in four starts - the best being a win in the California Wine Stakes in her stakes debut. She has been successful in sprint races but stretches out for the La Canada.
Ondine - has hit the board in eight all eight career starts (3 wins, 3 seconds and 2 thirds) for trainer Bob Baffert including last time out - a win in the Beverley J. Lewis Stakes at Barretts Race Meet at Fairplex in September - her first stakes score. She has just one graded stakes start - a third in the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks in June but her win last time out served notice that she is ready for another step up. She has won two of three career starts at this distance.

Oscar Party - won the 2012 Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies Turf and then raced to a fourteenth in last year's Breeders' Cup Fillies Turf and followed that with an Allowance score in May. Then was a respectable third in the Grade 3 Regret Stakes at Churchill Downs May 15 and a fifth in the minor Sandy Blue Handicap at Del Mar August 18. She had a second in the Grade 2 Indiana Oaks October 5 and fell back to earth a bit with a fifth in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss October 26. Last time out was a third in the Zia Park Derby November 27.
Spellbound - Richard Mandella trained filly has seven career starts with a fifth and a pair of sixths in her first three starts. Since then she has won two straight - an Allowance February 24 followed a MSW score at Santa Anita January 4 and she finished fourth way back in April - in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks. Last time out was a sixth in the Grade 2 Bayakoa Stakes at Hollywood Park December 7 after eight months away.
Rathbaun - races in stakes company for the first time Sunday for trainer Peter Miller but is coming off one of two career wins - an Allowance Optional Claiming at Hollywood Park December 12 after a second in a similar race at Golden Gate in November. She has two wins and two seconds in eight career starts and looks ready for her step up in class.
