She followed that with a disappointing fifth in the Grade 1 Haskell - her worst performance since an eighth in the 2013 Breeders' Cup. She has been very good the last 13 months - three wins, three seconds and a third place finish. She enters off an OK third in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga August 29 after two straight runner-up finishes - behind Stopchargingmaria in the Grade 3 Shuvee Handicap here August 2 and the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps Stakes in June. Before that she had a win in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap, a second in the Grade 1 Azeri Stakes and a career highlight win in the Breeders' Cup Distaff. Lovely Maria - Larry Jones trained filly has four wins and three second place finishes in 10 career starts but hasn't looked great lately - a sixth last time out in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes August 22 at Saratoga followed a fifth as 1-5 favorite in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks July 11. Before those disappointments were a terrific win in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks, a victory in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at here April 4, a good second in her graded stakes debut - the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds February 21 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score in wire-to-wire fashion January 25. Lovely Maria had been virtually untouchable in 2015 before her last two starts and will be in search of a strong bounce back when she leaves from the rail with Kerwin Clark guiding her.
Frivolous - has 22 career starts for trainer Victoria Oliver with five wins, four seconds and three third place finishes and enters having posted two wins and a second place finish in her last three starts. Got Lucky - has five wins and six second place finishes in 15 career starts for trainer Todd Pletcher and enters off a decent second in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes August 29 and a nice two race win streak - the minor Lady's Secret Stakes August 2 and the Grade 3 Molly Pitcher Stakes July 3 - both results at Monmouth Park by a combined 10 lengths. She also has three runner-up finishes in graded stakes action in 2013/2014.
