2016 Pat O'Brien Stakes Race Preview at Del Mar Race Track

Masochistic 4-5 - one of the best sprinters in 2015 - speedy Ron Ellis trained gelding has placed in nine of 12 career starts - seven wins and two second place finishes. He enters off a gate-to-wire Allowance Optional Claiming score by 6 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita July 8 which followed eight months away from the track and an uncharacteristic last of fourteen in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint (after sustaining an injury in the race). He had a second in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar last July 26 after a terrific three race win streak in 2015- the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes by 3 1/2 lengths with an impressive 110 Beyer Speed Figure June 27, in the Grade 2 Kona Gold Stakes with a 102 Beyer Speed Figure April 11 in his graded stakes debut and a 2 1/4 length Allowance Optional Claiming score February 28. Masochistic won six of his first eight career starts and hopes to rediscover that form from post 5 Saturday. Tyler Baze will be in the saddle of the overwhelming morning line favorite

Vyjack 3-1 - won his first four career starts including a pair of graded stakes scores at Aqueduct - the Grade 2 Jerome Stakes and the 2013 Grade 3 Gotham Stakes to start 2014 but has been up and down since. He also won the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap September 27, 2014. He had seven starts last year with just a second and a third place finish to show for it - a third in the minor Forbidden Apple Stakes July 11 at Belmont Park followed an OK second in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes in June. He has just two starts in 2016 - an Allowance score at Keeneland April 21 and a second last time out in the Grade 3 Red Bank Stakes at Monmouth Park June 5. Vyjack has been competitive at times - seven wins, three seconds and three third place finishes in 25 career starts enters looking pretty good. He looks for his first stakes score in 23 months Saturday from post 3 with Flavien Prat guiding the morning line second choice.
