2016 Lone Star Park Handicap Race Preview at Lone Star Park

Shotgun Kowboy 5-2 - R Trout trained gelding has six wins, two seconds and a third place finish in 12 career starts. He posted three consecutive impressive wins last summer including the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park in September and the minor Oklahoma Classics Cup in October but has failed to place in three starts after that including a fourth in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn Park March 19, a fifth in the minor Duncan F. Kenner Stakes at Fair Grounds in February and a seventh in the Grade 1 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs in November. Last time out he rebounded and posted a respectable second in the Grade 3 Texas Mile here May 6. Shotgun Kowboy has been impressive in the past and hopes build on a decent effort last time out. Luis Quinonez rides the morning line favorite.

Cyrus Alexander 3-1 - Jerry Hollendorfer trained colt has three wins, four seconds and two third place finishes in 14 career starts. He has failed to place in his last three -a fourth last time out in the minor Santana Mile here April 2 followed an eighth in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap March 12 and a disappointing sixth in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes here February 6. Before that was a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming here January 8, an Allowance Optional Claiming score in December and two straight off-the-board finishes including a fourth in the Grade 3 Affirmed Stakes on this track in June. Cyrus Alexander has been up and down in his career so far and looks for his first stakes score Monday from post 3. Martin Garcia will be in the saddle of the morning line second choice.

Supermason 4-1 - Bret Calhoun trained gelding has six wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 17 career starts. He makes his graded stakes debut Sunday on the heels of a two-race win streak by a combined 10 1/2 lengths - an Allowance Optional Claiming May 15 in track record time for 7 1/2 furlongs and the minor Premiere Stakes April 7 - both on this track. He also won the minor Texas Stallion Stakes here in May, 2015. Supermason has been impressive indeed and will be out to keep the roll going from post 5 with Lindey Wade guiding him.

Rocket Time 7-2 - Albert Stall trained gelding has been impressive in his 12 race career - seven wins and a pair of third place finishes so far. He won the minor Tenacious Stakes at Fair Grounds in 2014 and went on to a fifth in the minor Essex Handicap in February, 2015 and a respectable third in the Grade 3 Commonwealth in April at Keeneland. He has raced four straight Allowance Optional Claiming races since and has won three - two straight ahead of this week - the last coming at Churchill Downs May 7. He looks for his first graded stakes score and enters in good form. Colby Hernandez gets the call from gate 2.

Carve 9-2 - defending runner-up in this race had three straight wins in the summer of 2014 including the Grade 3 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap. He also won the minor Fifth Season Stakes at Oaklawn Park in January, 2015. He has placed in just two of six starts since last year's edition of this race and enters off an OK third after fading in the Grade 3 Texas Mile here Many 6. It followed consecutive seventh place finishes at Oaklawn Park - the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap April 16 and the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap March 19, a third in the minor Essex Handicap in February and off-the-board finishes in two stakes races. Carve has been inconsistent to say the least and will be after his first win in 17 months when he leaves from gate 4 with Iram Vargas Diego in the saddle.

Spider's Alibi 20-1 - has placed in nine of 11 career starts - two wins, four seconds and three third place finishes. He won the minor Graduation Stakes in his career debut but has not tasted victory in stakes company since. Last time out was a third in an Allowance May 8 after a second behind Supermason in the minor Premiere Stakes April 7 - both results on this track. Before that were consecutive third place finishes - an Allowance Optional Claiming February 19 and the minor Manitoba Derby in August. Spider's Alibi steps into graded stakes company for the first time Monday in decent overall form. David Cabrera has the mount.

F J Uncle Vic 30-1 - finished third in this race in 2014 and has been less-than-spectacular since. Last time out was a seventh in the minor Premiere Stakes here April 7 which followed another seventh in the minor Maxxam Gold Cup at Sam Houston in February, a good win in the minor Star of Texas Stakes at Sam Houston in January and two more seventh place finishes to end her 2015 campaign. F J Uncle Vic hopes for his first graded stakes score in his second try from the outside post 7 with Ernest Valdez-Jimenez in the reins.
