2016 Los Angeles Stakes Race Preview at Los Alamitos

San Onofre - Karen Headley trained gelding has been good in his career - five wins and four second place finishes in 12 career starts - most of the success coming in his first eight starts including three straight runner-up finishes - the 2015 Los Angeles Stakes May 25, the Grade 2 Kona Gold Stakes in April, 2015 and the minor Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint in January of last year. He also owns a four race win streak in his career - no stakes races however. San Onofre has not quite been the same in his last four starts however - an eighth last time out in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes March 12 followed a fourth in the minor Donald Valpredo California Cup Sprint Stakes, a nice win over the terrific Salutos Amigos in the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes in January and a fourth in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes in June. He tries to replicate his form from the beginning of the year and looks to hit the board for the first time in three starts when he leaves from the outside post 6 with Edwin Maldonado aboard.

Wild Dude - Jerry Hollendorfer double Grade 1 winner has really struggled in his last two starts after a good stretch. He's finished sixth in his last two starts overall - the Grade 2 San Carlos Stales last time out March 12 and the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Before that he was decent indeed, in his previous five starts - a good win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Turf Championship October 3, a close second in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien Stakes at Del Mar August 22, a win at 11-1 odds in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes in July to go along with consecutive third place finishes - in the Grade 1 Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita June 27 and in the 2015 Grade 3 Los Angeles Stakes May 25. He also had a nice upset win in the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita March 7, 2015. Wild Dude now has seven wins, four seconds and four third place finishes in 20 career starts and hopes to bounce back from a pair of uncharacteristic efforts. Kent Desormeaux has been tabbed to ride from post 3.

Yiannis - will make just his sixth career start for trainer John Sadler having posted three wins and a third place finish so far. He won the minor San Pedro Stakes in his second career start a year ago and went on to a fourth in his only graded stakes appearance in the Grade 3 Lazaro Barrera Stakes in May and an Allowance Optional Claiming score in August. He returned recently from a 7 1/2 month hiatus and finished third in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Santa Anita. Yiannis has been decent in limited action and will be after his first graded stakes score Saturday from gate 2. Victor Espinoza has the mount.

Raised a Secret - Mark Glatt trainee has five wins, 10 seconds and six third place finishes - the best of which was a win in the minor Harris Farm Stakes at Fresno in October. He has finished second in three of his last four starts - an Allowance Optional Claiming last time out at Santa Anita March 25, the minor Donald Valpredo California Cup January 30 and the minor Cary Grant Stakes in November with a fifth in the Grade 3 Midnight Lute Stakes sandwiched in there. Raised a Secret has placed in four of his last five starts and hopes for his first graded stakes score in his second try. Agapito Delgadillo gets the call from post 5.

W. Giles - Kristin Mulhall trained gelding has seven wins, five seconds and six third place finishes in 25 career starts and makes his stakes debut Saturday. He enters on a three race win streak - a Starter Allowance last time out March 6, an Allowance Optional Claiming January 30 and another Allowance Optional Claiming January 3 - all at Santa Anita. He has placed in four straight overall and looks ready for his step up in competition. David Charles Lopez has been tabbed to ride from the rail.

Sir Kip - has three wins in eight career starts for trainer Juan Aleman. He makes his stakes debut Saturday off an Allowance score at Los Alamitos Quarter Horse February 12 and off-the-board finishes in three straight races including a ninth two starts back on this track. Sir Kip hadn't been impressive before last time out and will be out to make a serious statement - from gate 4 with Christian Aragon guiding him.
