2016 Canadian Derby Race Preview at Northlands Park

Ready Intaglio 7-2 - has placed in 13 of 15 career starts for trainer Amber Meyaard - five wins, four seconds and four third place finishes. He enters on the heels of a nice two race win streak on this track - the minor Count Lathum Stakes last time out July 16 and the minor Ky Alta Handicap June 18. They followed an OK third in the minor Western Canada Handicap here in May and an Allowance score at Turf Paradise in April. Ready Intaglio is the only multiple stakes winner in the field and having won three of his last four starts overall has to be in the conversation Saturday. Shamaree Muir will be in the irons of the tepid morning line favorite from gate 8.

Access This 4-1 - has placed in six of seven career starts for trainer Monica Russell - two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes. He makes his graded stakes debut off a second behind Law Master last time out in the Alberta Derby at Grand Prairie July 31 which followed a third in the minor Coca-Cola Stakes at Emerald Downs June 5, another third in the minor Auburn Handicap on that track May 15 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Golden Gate in April. Access This has been in every race in his career and tries for a first graded stakes score from post 5 Saturday. Richard Harvey Hamel has the mount on the second betting choice.

Inside Straight 9-2 - former Todd Pletcher trainee has 12 career starts with four wins, a second and two third place finishes for new trainer Robertino Diodoro. He enters in career best form - a win last time out in the minor Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia August 1 followed a third in the minor Harry Jeffrey Stakes on that track July 9 and a Claiming score at Belmont Park in May. He failed to hit the board in his previous two. Inside Straight seems to be peeking ahead of his graded stakes debut and should be in the hunt from the outside gate 12 with Rico Walcott guiding this intriguing morning line third choice.

Lord Vancouver 6-1 - has four wins, a second and three third place finishes in 15 career starts for trainer Philip Hall. He has placed in five of his last six starts ahead of this weekend - a win last time out in the minor British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap at Hastings August 1 followed a second in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap on that track July 1, an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Hastings June 19 and a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming on that track in May. He also had an Allowance score at Turf Paradise in April. Lord Vancouver has been strong lately and off a career-best effort could be a factor Saturday. Dennis Araujo is scheduled to ride from post 9.

Law Master 8-1 - has four wins, three seconds and two third place finishes in 14 career starts for trainer Dale Saunders. He had a career best outing last time out - a win in the minor Alberta Derby at Grand Prairie July 31 after a fifth in the minor Count Lathum Stakes on this track July 16 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score here July 2. Law Master tries for his third win in seven weeks Saturday when he leaves from gate 4 with Keishan Balgobin in the reins.

Ruck 10-1 - Reade Baker trained colt has two wins and two seconds in eight career starts. He enters off a second behind Inside Straight in the minor Manitoba Stakes at Assiniboia August 1, an eighth in the minor Charlie Barley Stakes at Woodbine July 3, an Allowance Optional Claiming score on that track in May and a sixth in the minor Display Stakes at Woodbine in November. His only graded stakes start resulted in a fifth in the Grade 3 Grey Stakes at Woodbine in October. Ruck has been up and down in his career and will be chasing his first stakes score Saturday. Omar Moreno is scheduled to ride from gate 6.

Solve 12-1 - Robertino Diodoro trained gelding has a win, a second and a third place finish in nine career starts and enters on the heels of consecutive fourth place finishes - last time out in the minor Manitoba Derby August 1 and in a Starter Optional Claiming at Churchill Downs June 30. Before that was a second in a Starter Allowance at Churchill Downs, a third in a similar race at Keeneland in April and a Maiden Claiming score at Fair Grounds in March. Solve has been OK in his career and will be out to make a statement Saturday. Dane Nelson will try to accomplish that goal from post 11.

Sorryaboutnothing 12-1 - has just one win and one third place finish in nine career starts for trainer Troy Taylor but has failed to place in six of his last seven starts ahead of this weekend. He ended 2015 with a seventh in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity and started 2016 with an eighth in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes and an OK third in the minor Pasadena Stakes at Santa Anita in March. Last time out was a fifth in a Claiming race at Del Mar July 23 after consecutive sixths - both Allowance races earlier this year. Sorryaboutnothing hasn't looked good lately but is the most experienced entry in the field. He hopes to parlay that experience into a career defining win from gate 2. David Lopez rides.

Hold the Giant 15-1 - has two wins and a second place finish in five career starts for trainer Tim Rycroft - both of the wins coming in his first two career starts - the best of which was in the minor Edmonton Juvenile Stakes here in July, 2016. He makes his graded stakes debut Saturday off a fourth in the minor Count Lathum Handicap here July 16, an OK second in the minor Ky Alta Stakes on this track June 18 and a fifth in the minor River Rock Casino Handicap on this track two weeks before that. Hold the Giant has been OK so far in his career but looks for his first win in a year - from the rail with Gerry Olguin aboard.

B C Charlie 20-1 - Craig MacPherson trained gelding has two wins and two seconds in seven career starts - all at Hastings. He makes his graded stakes debut off a second in the minor British Columbia Cup Stellar's Jay Handicap August 1, a fifth in the minor Chris Loseth Handicap July 1 and a seventh in the minor River Rock Casino Handicap in June. He did win two straight races in May however including an Allowance Optional Claiming May 23. B C Charlie looks to snap a three race losing streak and for his first stakes score from post 3 Saturday. Skyler White Shield gets the call.

The Accuser 20-1 - Rob Chabot trained gelding has placed in four of eight career starts - one win, one second and two third place finishes - all on this track. He steps into graded stakes company for the first time off a second in the minor Count Lathum Handicap July 16, a third in an Allowance Optional Claiming July 2 and a maiden score June 15. The Accuser has been OK the last three starts and looks ready for his step up in competition. Damario Bynoe has been tabbed to ride from post 7.

Northernlocamotive 30-1 - has a win, a second and a third place finish in nine career starts (all on this track) for trainer Joan Petrowski - he finally broke maiden last time out on this track August 12. Before that was a ninth in his only stakes action to date - the minor Count Lathum Stakes here July 16, a third and a fifth respectively in a pair of MSW races. Northernlocamotive hasn't been all that impressive but arrives off a career best effort. Jockey Andre Martin will try to build on that from gate 10.

Perfect Gent - Alternate Entry has yet to post victory in 10 career starts but he does have a second and three third place finishes. Last time out was a fourth in the minor Alberta Derby at Grand Prairie July 31 which followed a fourth in a MSW on this track July 2 and a second in a similar race here June 15. He has failed to place in five of his last six ahead of this weekend.

Warden of the West - Alternate Entry, Monica Russell trained gelding has three wins and a second place finish in eight career starts. Last time out was a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Del Mar July 15 after a sixth and a ninth respectively in a pair of similar races at Santa Anita.
