2017 British Columbia Premiers Handicap Preview, Entries & Odds

Highway Boss 2-1
Has six wins, six seconds and three third-place finishes in 33 career starts for trainer Glen Todd. Last time out was a career-best win in the minor SW Randall Plate Handicap on this track September 9 - he failed to place in his previous four starts including two stakes on this track. Highway Boss has just one win in the last two years (that coming last time out) and will try to build on that nice victory from gate 6. Aaron Gryder will be in the reins of the tepid morning line favorite.
Killin Me Smalls 5-2
Defending two-time champion in this race has 20 wins, six seconds and six third-place finishes in 43 career starts for trainer Ernie Keller. He arrives off a disappointing seventh in an Allowance at Century Downs September 23 which followed four stakes wins - the listed Speed to Spare Stakes September 2, the minor Westerner Handicap August 19, the minor Don Getty Handicap July 29 and the minor Fred Jones Handicap July 8 - all at Northlands Park. Killin Me Smalls has 12 stakes wins in his career but didn't look great last time out. He tries for his fifth stakes score in six starts Monday when he leaves from post 5 with Keishan Balgobin in the irons of the second betting choice.

Venetian Mask 9-2
Defending runner-up in this race - Mike Anderson trained gelding has six wins, five seconds and three third-place finishes in 26 career starts. He arrives on the heels of a sixth in the minor SW Randall Plate Handicap here September 9, a third in the minor Pacific Customs Brokers Classic here August 7 and an OK second in the minor Lieutenant Governor's Handicap on this track July 1. Before that was a good win in the minor John Longden 6000 Handicap on this track June 4 and a third and a second in a pair of minor stakes races to start her year. Venetian Mask had placed in seven straight races before last time out and will be out to avenge his uncharacteristic result last time out when he leave from post 3 with David Lopez aboard the morning line third choice.
Neveradoubt 8-1
Barbara Heads trained gelding has 20 career starts with five wins, a second and two third-place finishes. Last time out was an OK third in the minor SW Randall Plate here September 9 after a second in the minor Pacific Customs Brokers Classic on this track August 7 and a Claiming score on this track July 22. He also posted a good win in the 2016 minor Snow Chief Stakes at Santa Anita. Neveradoubt has been OK lately and makes his graded stakes debut Monday from post 7. Antonio Ambrosio Reyes has the mount.
Awesome Slate 8-1
Has six wins, two seconds and a third-place finish in 15 career starts for trainer Cindy Krasner. He finished fourth in the 2016 G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay and has been mostly good since. Last time out was a win in the minor HBPA Claiming Championship Stakes here September 16 which followed a Claiming score here September 1 and a second and a win respectively in a pair of Claiming races on this track this past summer. Awesome Slate shoots for a third stakes score Monday and arrives in career best form. Jockey Richard Harvey Hamel will try to keep the roll going from the outside gate 8 Monday.
Crazy Prophet 10-1
Finished second in the G3 British Columbia Derby here race last year and has been OK since. Last time out was a second in the minor SW Randall Plate Handicap here September 9 which followed a sixth in an Allowance on this track July 16 and tenth place finishes in two minor stakes races earlier this year. He won the 2016 British Columbia Cup Classic here last October and also had a minor stakes score in this track in 2015 but has gone winless in his last four starts overall. Amadeo Perez will try to snap Crazy Prophet's skid from gate 4 Monday from gate 4.
Calgary Caper 12-1
Finished fifth in this race last year and has six wins, eight seconds and three third-place finishes in 31 career starts. He arrives off a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming last time out October 1 here after a tenth in the minor SW Randall Plate Handicap on this track September 9, a DNF in the minor Pacific Customs Brokers Classic Handicap here August 7 and an OK third in the minor Lieutenant Governor's Handicap here July 1. He won three straight races in the summer of 2016 on this track including two minor stakes scores but hasn't been all that great since. He shoots for his first stakes win in over a year Monday and for a first graded stakes score from the rail. Silvino Morales rides.
Hunters Appeal 15-1
James Brown trained gelding has three wins and two third-place finishes in his seven career starts - all at Hastings. He stepped into graded stakes company for the first time last time out and finished a disappointing ninth in the G3 British Columbia Derby September 9 after a third in an Allowance August 21, a good win in the minor Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial Handicap July 7 and a third in a Waiver Claiming July 16. Hunters Appeal had been OK before last time out and hopes to bounce back off that effort from the rail. Sahin Civaci will be in the saddle.
