Weemissfrankie Favored in Saturday's Hollywood Starlet Stakes

Rob Gregorka

Las Vegas, NV -- The Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet Stakes on Saturday at Hollywood Park is expected to have Weemissfrankie as the heavy betting favorite in a field of six. The race for 2-year-old fillies also includes Charm the Maker, who won the Sharp Cat Stakes last month; Killer Graces, who won two sprint stakes earlier this year; Self Preservation, who simply can't find a way to beat Weemissfrankie; Lady Pecan and Mi Vida.

Weemissfrankie has won three of her four career starts as she won her maiden race at Del Mar against nine rivals and then won the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and the Grade 1 Oak Leaf Stakes. The only loss for the horse came in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies as she was third in a field of 14.

Weemissfrankie is trying to do something on Saturday that rarely happens and that is sweep the three Grade 1 stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

Weemissfrankie won the Del Mar Debutante and the Oak Leaf Stakes and now she will try and win the Hollywood Starlet. Only one other horse in history has pulled off the triple that Weemissfrankie will be trying for and that was Excellent Meeting in 1998.

"There is not much we can accomplish, other than win all three Grade 1's in California," trainer Peter Eurton said. "It's not like we're running for ribbons." Weemissfrankie is being pointed to next year's Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs with one or two races in the spring to prep for that race. "The question is, do I want to run her once or twice before the Kentucky Oaks?" Eurton said. "Everyone had so much fun going to Churchill Downs; they would dig doing it again."

The two horses that might have a chance to upset Weemissfrankie on Saturday in the Hollywood Starlet Stakes are Self Preservation, who was second in the Del Mar Debutante and fourth in the BC Juvenile Fillies, and Charm the Maker, who was third in the Oak Leaf and first in the Sharp Cat Stakes.

Charm the Maker had a nice workout on Wednesday at Santa Anita for trainer Ron McAnally. "We're ready," McAnally said. "The main thing is she's doing well. I couldn't believe how well she did it, and I don't like to work horses fast."

The Hollywood Starlet Stakes is the 9th race on a 10-race card at Hollywood Park on Saturday.
