Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap

Dave Bond

Las Vegas, NV -- The 29th running of the Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap comes our way this Saturday from Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. 11 horses Four Years Old and Upward will race 1 1/8 miles on Gulfstream's Turf track in search of a share of the $300,000 purse.

The field of 11 horses includes a host of graded stakes winners and the Top 3 finishers from the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream only three weeks ago. The Turf Handicap is the second Grade 1 stakes race on Gulfstream's jammed Saturday horse racing schedule - one that includes two other stakes races as well. It is the 11th race with a post time of 5:13 PM ET.

Here is a list of the entries and what got them to this point.

The Favorites:

Get Stormy - In 2011 Get Stormy won two races including the Grade 1 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland and the Grade 1 Churchill's Turf Classic, and finished second and third twice, out of eight starts. But Get Stormy hasn't won in four starts and is coming off a terribly disappointing 12th at the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile in November. Get Stormy had had issues at Gulfstream including an 8th last time out on this track and a third at this race last year.

Boisterous - Boisterous ended 2011 with a bang with two straight graded stakes wins in a row - the Grade 2 Red Smith Handicap at Aqueduct in November and the Grade 3 Knickerbocker Stakes at Belmont in October. Boisterous enters this race as the hottest in the field - just ahead of...

Silver Medallion - has also won two straight races - the Grade 3 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes at Gulfstream on January 14th and the Grade 3 Tropical Turf Handicap at Calder in December. New trainer Todd Pletcher has this horse running well - two wins, a second and a third in four starts under Pletcher's guidance.

The Others:

Smart Bid - was last seen in September - an eighth place finish at the PTHA President's Cup Stakes and prior to that was second at the Grade 2 Sky Classic Stakes at Woodbine. Smart Bid has only one win in the last eight starts.

Yummy With Butter - finished second at the Ft. Lauderdale but was moved down to 6th because of interference. Prior to that was 4th in an Allowance at Tampa Bay Downs on December 14th.

Hollinger - benefitted from Yummy With Butter's misfortune and was moved up to second in the Grade 3 Ft. Lauderdale. Prior to that Hollinger finished 3rd at the Grade 3 Tropical Turf Handicap at Calder.

Kindergarden Kid - finished 3rd at the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes and prior to that won the Pay the Butler Stakes at Aqueduct in November. Kindergarden Kid loves a soft track - something they are expecting Saturday!

Big Blue Kitten - has five wins in seven career starts including the Grade 2 Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga in August. Last time out Big Blue Kitten was third in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream on December 31st.

Al Khali - biggest win came in 2010 at the Grade 2 Bowling Green Handicap and is trained by Eclipse Award winning trainer Bill Mott.

Sangaree - most recently finished an impressive second in the Grade 3 Hal's Hope Stakes at Gulfstream and before that finished 6th in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile Handicap at Aqueduct.

Yankee Fortune - most recently finished second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream in December to the very quick Little Mike.

The Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap is Race 11 on Gulstream's Saturday card with a Post Time of 5:13 PM ET.
