San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita Park

Dave Bond

Las Vegas, NV -- After a brief hiatus, the horses are back at Santa Anita Park this Sunday April 22nd to close out the winter/spring meet as the 73rd running of the Grade 2 San Juan Capistrano Handicap goes for horses four years old and upward. $150,000 is on the line for horses willing to stretch out to 1 3/4 miles in Santa Anita's turf track.

A small field of six will go in race 9 on Santa Anita's Sunday's schedule with a post time of 4:38 PM. It figures to be a wide open affair - only one of the six has a stakes win so far this year.

Let's take a look at the six entries and what brought them into one of the final races of Santa Anita's spring meet.

San Juan Capistrano Handicap Race Favorites

Bourbon Bay - Bourbon Bay won this event in 2010 and has to be the favorite to win again especially after an impressive win at the Grade 2 San Luis Rey Stakes last time out on this track on March 25th. Bourbon Bay has owned Santa Anita - six wins in seven starts at this track including five Grade 2 events.

Harrods Creek - finished fourth last time out in the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes on March 24th but placed in the last two starts before that and could be the surprise of this race. Harrods Creek finished second in the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes at Woodbine and was third at the Grade 2 Red Smith Handicap before that in November at Aqueduct.

Remaining Field Entries

Eagle Poise - finished fifth most recently in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Stakes on February 26th last time out but before that won two straight - the Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes and Allowance race both at Woodbine toward the end of 2011. In 21 career starts, Eagle Poise has six wins, four seconds and one third place finish.

Dhaamer - most recently finished second in the Grade 3 Tokyo City Cup Stakes at Santa Anita on March 24th and raced in England winning three times in 10 starts there - more recently was 7th in a Handicap race at Nottingham on October and before that was 10th in a similar race at Newbury in September.

Hog's Hollow - most recently posted a decent result - a third in the Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes behind Bourbon Bay. Before that Hog's Hollow posted a win on this track in an Allowance Optional Claiming race on January 27th.

Bonfire Knight - has raced three times already this year and has posted two wins and a third place finish - all in Allowance Optional Claiming races at Golden Gate.
