2016 La Brea Stakes Preview, Entries & Odds

A solid field of eight have been confirmed for the La Brea Stakes - race 7 on Santa Anita's stakes opening day Monday card. Post time is 3:30 PM. Let's take a peek into the past performances of all eight combatants for this important G1 stakes.
2016 La Brea Stakes Entries at Santa Anita Park
Lightstream 2-1 - Brian Lynch trained filly has six career starts and four impressive wins - all the wins at seven furlongs. Last time out was a great win in the G2 Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland October 22 which followed a respectable second in the G1 Test Stakes at Saratoga August and an OK third in the G1 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park July 2. Before that were wins in the minor Soaring Softly Stakes May 21, the G3 Beaumont Stakes at Keeneland April 17 and a maiden score by 2 1/4 lengths with a 104 Beyer Speed Figure at first asking. Lightstream has been impressive and will be after her second straight graded stakes score from gate 2. Julien Leparoux will be in the irons of the morning line favorite.
Finley'sluckycharmn 5-2 - has six career starts for trainer Bret Calhoun with five wins. She enters off three straight wins all in gate-to-wire fashion by a combined 21 lengths - the minor Dream Supreme Stakes by 8 1/2 lengths at Churchill Downs November 25 and two Allowance scores on that track. Before the three wins was a seventh in her only graded stakes start - the G2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes at Fair Grounds in February. Finley'sluckycharm has been untouchable the last three months and will be after her first graded stakes score from post 3 Monday. Brian Joseph Hernandez has the mount.

Last time out was a second as heavy favorite behind Chao Chom in the minor Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar November 13 after a nice win in the minor California Distaff Handicap here October 15, a second in the minor Beverley J. Lewis Stakes at Los Alamitos September 11 and three straight wins to start her career including the minor Fleet Treat Stakes at Del Mar in July, the minor Melair Stakes on this track in May and a maiden score by an incredible 16 1/4 lengths. Enola Gray has been a factor every time out and hopes to be again in her graded stakes debut. New rider Mike Smith gets the call from post 7.
Constellation 6-1 - has placed in six of seven career starts for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer - four wins, a second and a third place finish. She finished third in the G1 Spinaway Stakes in September, 2015 - her second career starts and went on to a second in the G2 Matron Stakes at Belmont Park a month later. She has won three of four starts since - the minor City of Phoenix Stakes at Turf Paradise last time out November 12, the minor Cicada Stakes three starts back January 17 and the minor Furlough Stakes in November, 2015. Constellation has been in every race so far and will be after her first ever graded stakes score from gate 4. David Romero Flores rides.
Perfect Pic 6-1 - will race for just the fourth time for trainer James Cassidy having posted a win, a second and a third place finish so far. Last time out was a respectable graded stakes debut - a third in the G3 LA Woman Stakes here October 9. Before that was a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Los Alamitos in September and a win at first asking in August. Perfect Pic has been decent so far and will be chasing a career-defining win from the outside gate 8 Monday. Santiago Gonzalez will be in the irons.

Chao Chom 8-1 - has placed in all seven career starts for trainer Gary Stute - two wins, four seconds and a third place finish. She makes her graded stakes debut Monday off a nice win in the minor Betty Grable Stakes at Del Mar November 13 and three straight runner-up finishes in Allowance Optional Claiming races in California - the last coming on this track October 20. Chao Chom steps up in good form and will leave from gate 6 with Kent Desormeaux aboard.
Coniah 15-1 - Kiaran McLaughlin trained filly has three wins, two seconds and three third place finishes in 14 career starts. She made her graded stakes debut August 17 and finished a reasonable third against older competition in the G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap and followed that with a sixth in the G2 Prioress Stakes at Saratoga September 4 and an Allowance Optional Claiming score September 29 at Belmont Park. Last time out was a fourth in the minor Zia Park Oaks November 23 after an OK third in the G2 Raven Run Stakes at Keeneland October 22. Coniah has been decent in her career but has yet to post a stakes score. Tyler Baze has been tabbed with changing all of that from post 5 Monday.
Lunar Empress 20-1 - has placed in all seven career starts for trainer Richard Baltas - two wins, four seconds and a third place finish. She makes her stakes debut Monday off an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Del Mar November 12 and a second, a third and another second in a trio of Allowance races. Lunar Express has been competitive so far against lesser company and hopes that it translates in her major step up in competition. Norberto Arroyo has been tabbed to ride from the rail.
