Trainer Bob Baffert has pre-entered two superstars for the 2018 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

Trainer Bob Baffert has pre-entered two superstars for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. In all, an eye-catching 18 females have been pre-entered into the race, which holds a purse of $1,000,000. The Grade 1 event will be contested over 7 furlongs and has a post time of 10:00 ET on Saturday, November 3 at Churchill Downs.

Leading Baffert's charge is Dream Tree, who is undefeated coming into the race. She kicked off her career with two solid victories before capturing the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos to end her 2-year-old year. That win put her in the mix for the 2018 Kentucky Oaks, and in her 3-year-old debut, she dominated rivals in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita, which made her an Oaks favorite.

However, an injury forced her to miss the race, and she did not return to action until September in the Grade 2 Prioress Stakes. Contested at 6 furlongs, the race served as a nice comeback spot, and she completely romped to a 4 1/4-length triumph. Recently, she recorded a bullet workout at Santa Anita.

Marley's Freedom is Baffert's other pre-entered standout. The 4-year-old filly is undefeated in three starts since moving to his barn in April. Under Baffert's care, she won the Grade 3 Desert Stormer Stakes at Santa Anita by open lengths, then easily won the Grade 2 Great Lady M Stakes at Los Alamitos before shipping to Saratoga and capturing her first Grade 1 score in the Ballerina Stakes. That victory was the most impressive of her career because she won by 3 3/4 lengths over a stellar field. Much like her stablemate Dream Tree, Marley's Freedom has been working out well leading up to this race.

Trainer Brad Cox will challenge Baffert after having a tremendous year with his fillies, and while his Longines Distaff challenger Monomoy Girl has grabbed most of the headlines this year, Golden Mischief has been very strong in her own right. She has been pre-entered in this race after winning three in a row, including the Grade 2 TCA Oaks at Keeneland last time out. The filly moved to Cox's barn to begin 2018 and has rewarded her new Kentucky-based trainer with 4 wins in 6 starts. The TCA Oaks was the first graded stakes score of her career and signaled that she is in excellent form coming into this race.

The classy Finley'sluckycharm has been pre-entered into this race for the second straight year after finishing ninth a year ago. This year, she heroically held on to win the Grade 1 Madison Stakes at Keeneland, then won the Grade 2 Honorable Miss Stakes two races later. She has been a bit inconsistent this year, though, as she had a couple of non-efforts in the Ballerina and the Grade 1 Humana Distaff Stakes.

Selcourt is an interesting pre-entry into the race. The lightly-raced filly has won 4 times in 6 lifetime starts. In her last two starts, she won the Grade 3 Las Flores Stakes and the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes, both at Santa Anita. However, her last race was March 24, which means that she will run off of an eight-month layoff. The daughter of Tiz Wonderful has a long line of solid workouts at Santa Anita, though, signaling that she is ready. She has hardly ever trailed at any point this year.

The Steve Asmussen-trained Mia Mischief comes into this race off of a second-place effort last time out in the Grade 1 Test Stakes. She was then second once again in the Prioress behind Dream Tree, and though she was not very close that time, both races showed her class, even if they were losses, because you came away thinking that she had run way too well to lose. This filly is 2-for-3 at Churchill Downs, where she won the Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes earlier in the year on Kentucky Oaks Day.

Other horses that have been pre-entered into the race include Anonymity, Bixby Lou, Chalon, Dream Pauline, Happy Like a Fool (second preference), Highway Star, Kirby's Penny, Miss Sunset, Mopotism (second preference), Shamrock Rose, Skye Diamonds, and Stormy Embrace.

What is the Breeders Cup' Filly & Mare Sprint?

The Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint is a 7-furlong (1408 m) Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred fillies and mares three years old and up. As its name implies, it is a part of the Breeders' Cup thoroughbred championships, the de facto year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing, generally held in the United States (also held one time in Canada). The race is run on a dirt course (either natural dirt or a synthetic surface such as Polytrack).

The race was run for the first time in 2007 during the first day of the expanded Breeders' Cup at that year's host track, Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. Beginning in 2009, this race is a Grade I event.

The 2007 race was held at a distance of 6 furlongs (1207 m) instead of the normal distance of 7 furlongs because of the configuration of the dirt track at Monmouth Park.
