As usual, there is no shortage of contenders in the $1 million Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), which drew 23 pre-entries.

Two 3-year-olds, Bruce Lunsford's Art Collector, fourth in the Preakness (G1) after posting four straight wins, and Grupo Seven C Stable's Jesus' Team, third in the Jim Dandy (G2) and the Preakness, figure to be challengers.

Klaravich Stables' Kelso Handicap (G2) winner Complexity, Jim Bakke and Gerald Isbister's Mr Freeze, fresh from a win in the Fayette (G2), and Gary Barber's 2019 Preakness Stakes winner War of Will are in this deep field.

C Z Rocket, who captured the "Win and You're In" Pat O'Brien, also has been pre-entered as a second choice in the Dirt Mile.

OWENDALE

Owendale is a horse who just keeps on improving. After a so-so freshman season, he's putting together a strong resume this year at age 3. The son of Into Mischief won his fourth race of the season with a powerful late run to nail the Oklahoma Derby (G3) at the end of September.

In fact, he's won every other outing this year - with maturity and added distance making a difference. "He's a horse that I've said all along I thought would be better with distance," said trainer Brad Cox, who won his first Breeders' Cup last year when eventual champion Monomoy Girl captured the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

After running unplaced in the Risen Star Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds in February, he came back after a break from the action to capture the Stonestreet Lexington Stakes (G3) April 13 at Keeneland with a four-wide late move under jockey Florent Geroux. Jumping into Grade 1 company in his next start, he ran third in the Preakness, rallying late once again to just miss finishing second, and beaten only a length and a quarter by winner War of Will.

"Before the Lexington he was really starting to move forward and turn it up in his training," Cox said. "We actually added a shadow roll that he's been running in since the Lexington. I'm not saying it's the shadow roll-it certainly hasn't hurt him-but he's really moved forward since late March. I guess you could say since the beginning of spring he really took off and started developing and just became a bigger, stronger, faster horse."

Between the Lexington and Oklahoma Derby, he won the Ohio Derby (G3) and ran fifth in the Travers Stakes (G1), in which he was stuck on the rail.

Owner Jim Rupp, who races as Rupp Racing, is fairly new to the business. He's been an owner for just four years, and is thoroughly enjoying the ride. His first horse Almasty, co-owned with his son-in-law John Wentworth's GenStar Thoroughbreds, won a Grade 3 stakes on the turf.

MR. MONEY (AE)

The aptly named Mr. Money has been "in the money" eight of his eleven career starts and has earned more than $1 million.

Winner of the Indiana (G3) and West Virginia (G3) Derbies, he recently finished second in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), snapping a streak of four victories in graded stakes races that began with the Pat Day Mile (G3) on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Losing by a neck to 31-1 long shot Math Wizard, who he bested in his last two starts, Mr. Money finished ahead of 6-5 favorite Improbable and Preakness winner War of Will.

Mr. Money, who is campaigned by Chester Thomas' Allied Racing Stable, is looking for a comeback in the Breeders' Cup. Last year, the Kentucky-based owner, who has been in the business since 2012, paid $100,000 to join the Breeders' Cup program as a Horse of Racing Age to start him to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile where he was fourth.

"I'm kind of surprised to be outrun by a horse we beat pretty handily a couple times. It was his day today and I guess it wasn't ours," trainer W. Bret Calhoun said. "We won four in a row and it's hard to win four in a row. We were hoping today would be the fifth for a million dollars in a Grade 1, but it wasn't meant to be. We'll regroup."

Calhoun, who earned his 3,000th career win in February, has saddled two Breeders' Cup winners. His father, William "Buddy" Calhoun, trained his own racehorses at Louisiana Downs while working full time as a schoolteacher. Bret helped him at the barn and eventually became an exercise rider before making training his full time career.

Mr. Money's regular rider is Gabriel Saez. A native of Panama, he has competed in two Breeders' Cup races and his looking for his first win in the event. In 2008, he won the Kentucky Oaks on Proud Spell, and the next day he rode the ill-fated Eight Belles to her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.

Mr. Money's father, Goldencents, won the 2013 and 2014 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Mr. Money sold for $130,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

About the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

The Breeders' Cup Las Vegas Dirt Mile is a 1-mile (1.6 km) Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred racehorses three years old and up. As its name implies, it is part of the Breeders' Cup thoroughbred championships, the de facto year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing, and is run on a dirt course (either natural dirt or a synthetic surface such as Polytrack). This contrasts with the similar Breeders' Cup Mile, run on grass. All Breeders' Cups to date have been conducted in the United States, with the exception of the 1996 event in Canada.

The Dirt Mile race was run for the first time in 2007 during the first day of the expanded Breeders' Cup at that year's host track, Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. It became a Grade I event in 2009.

Occasionally, various track configurations require minor changes in the distance of the race. The 2007 race at Monmouth Park was held at a distance of 1 mile 70 yards (1673 m) instead of the normal distance of 1-mile (1.6 km). The 2015 Breeders' Cup will be held at Keeneland, which does not have the ability to run one mile dirt races, and so the Dirt Mile is scheduled to be run out of the backstretch chute at a distance of 7 furlongs, 384 feet (1525 m).
