The difference in this race is that it will be contested on turf rather than Santa Anita's main dirt surface. The San Gabriel Stakes is open to older horses - four-years-old and up and it covers 1 1/8 miles. The race has attracted a solid group of six entries all trying to gain some traction early in the 2012 racing season.
The 61st running of the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes takes place this weekend - Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Santa Anita Park. The second $150,000 race of the weekend at Santa Anita Park features three-year-old fillies and covers 6 1/2 furlongs on Santa Anita's dirt track.
The 60th running of the Grade 2 San Fernando Stakes comes our way from Santa Anita Park on Saturday, January 14th 2012. The race covers 1 1/16 miles (8.5 furlongs) and takes place on Santa Anita's main dirt track. Four year olds will be racing for a purse of $150,000 - $90,000 to the winner, $30,000 to second, $18,000 to third, $9,000 to fourth and $3,000 to fifth.
A field of seven Kentucky Derby hopefuls will go a mile and 70 yards over the inner track at Aqueduct on Saturday in the $150,000 Count Fleet Stakes. Three horses that were in November's Breeders Cup are in the field including Alpha who is the 4-5 favorite on the morning line.
