Breeders' Cup Mile

Pogo

Pogo was Group 1-placed in France in 2020 and won stakes races in England in 2020 and 2021. He enjoyed a breakout season as a 6-year-old in 2022 when posting victories in the Group 3 Betfred John of Gaunt Stakes in May at Haydock Park and the Group 3 House of Cavani Menswear Criterion Stakes in June at Newmarket. He subsequently finished third by a neck in the Group 2 World Pool Lennox Stakes in July and ran second Aug. 20 at York in the Group 2 Sky Bet City of York Stakes.

Bred in Ireland by Thomas Foy, Pogo is by Zebedee (GB) out of the Diktat (GB) mare Cute (GB). He is trained by Charles Hills for owners Gary and Linnet Woodward.

Shirl's Speight

A homebred Speightstown colt for Charles Fipke out of his 2011 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Perfect Shirl, Shirl's Speight made quite a first impression when rolling to an eight-length runaway in a seven-furlong turf sprint July 4 at Woodbine.

He took control from the start and set a solid pace before leaving nine challengers reeling in his wake as he surged clear in the stretch. Jockey Rafael Hernandez had taken his foot off the gas by the time they passed the sixteenth pole as Shirl's Speight was geared down late and still covered the seven-eighths of a mile in 1:19.97. The seven-furlong course record at Woodbine is 1:19.22, set by Silent Poet in August 2019.

Trainer Roger Attfield next opted to witch him to the synthetic main track and stretch him out around two turns for the Grade 3, 1 1/16-mile Marine Stakes on July 25, 2020. Shirl's Speight rated off the pace in the Marine, seized command on Hernandez's cue on the final turn, and shook free to a 2 3/4-length victory.

More than 18 months later, Shirl's Speight returned to the winner's circle in graded stakes company with an explosive win the Grade 3 Tampa Bay Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs on Feb. 5, 2022. He stormed down the center of the track late and got up for the 9.50-1 upset win under Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Dreamloper

After winning three of 12 starts during her 3-year-old and 4-year-old campaigns in 2020 and 2021, Dreamloper (IRE) really started to put it all together for trainer Ed Walker in 2022.

She battled gamely in the closing strides of her season debut to win the Group 2 Betfair Exchange Dahlia Stakes May 1 at Newmarket and was even more impressive in her next start when dominating the opposition in the Group 1 Prix d'Ispahan May 29 at Longchamp.

Modern Games (IRE)

Godolphin's Modern Games (IRE) unleashed a blistering turn of foot down the stretch to win the 14th running of the $1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) to wrap up Future Stars Friday for 2-year-olds to kick off the 2021 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Del Mar. Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, Modern Games covered the mile on a firm Jimmy Durante Turf Course in 1:34.72. Prior to the start of the race, Albahr (GB), also owned by Godolphin, flipped in the starting gate and was scratched and Modern Games initially was ruled a scratch but allowed to run for purse money only.

Racing in midpack early on, Modern Games was sixth turning for home, angled out six wide and surged to the front at mid-stretch blowing past Grafton Street. Tiz the Bomb rallied from far back under Brian Hernandez Jr. to finish 1 ½ lengths back in second. For pari-mutuel purposes, Tiz the Bomb rewarded his backers with a $17.60 win payoff. A winner of four of six starts, the Godolphin homebred added $520,000 to his bankroll and increased his earnings to $595,348. Modern Games is a son of Dubawi (IRE) out of the New Approach (IRE) mare Modern Ideals.

"Modern Games pulled it through for us," said Appleby. "William (Buick) gave him a great ride. It's fantastic for the whole team. "Modern Games was hugely impressive in the race. I've been delighted with his work all week. He traveled over very well and taken everything in his stride. I was fairly confident coming in the race but to win like he did was quite special. He's very exciting for next year. Congratulations to all the team over here and back home and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed."

"To be honest I didn't know what happened in the gates," said winning rider Buick. "I heard walkie talkies saying they were going scratch me. The gate opened for me by one of the stall handlers so I could get away from Albahr. He broke electric the first time (through the gate, prior to the race) and then when they put him back in he was a little bit restless and he broke slow. But because I was in the one-hole, I managed to have a bit of time and get a good position. Then going to the three-eighths pole, I managed to switch out and get running and he really finished for me. Modern Games is a real pro. To be able to deal with that."

Modern Games broke his maiden on July 4 at 7 furlongs at Newmarket, and following a second-place finish in the Longines Irish Champions Weekend EBF Novice Stakes at Leicester, he won the Sept. 8 Nursery Handicap at Doncaster. Prior to the Breeders' Cup, Modern Games captured the 7-furlong Somerville Tattersalls Stakes (G3) at Newmarket on Sept. 23.

Smooth Like Strait

Smooth Like Strait, a 2-year-old Midnight Lute colt owned and bred by Cannon Thoroughbreds, broke his maiden in his third career start in a turf sprint at Santa Anita Park on Oct. 31, 2019.

Sent off at 15.60-1 odds in a competitive field for his stakes debut, Smooth Like Strait scored a front-running upset win by 2 1/2 lengths in the Grade 3, one-mile Cecil B. DeMille Stakes at Del Mar on Dec. 1.

Smooth Like Strait finished fourth in a listed stakes at Santa Anita to close out 2019, and then checked in a good second in another listed event on the same course for his February 2020 debut. Trainer Mike McCarthy next shipped the colt to Churchill Downs for the listed War Chant Stakes on May 23, and he scored by 1 ¾ lengths under John Velazquez.

He was then given over two months off before returning in the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar on Aug. 9, which he won easily to improve her career record to four wins from eight starts.

Smooth Like Strait shipped back to Kentucky in late summer and finished fourth in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes Presented by Smithfield as the 6-5 favorite. McCarthy kept up the cross-country schedule for his colt by bringing her to Santa Anita Park for the Grade 2 Twilight Derby on Oct. 18, and Smooth Like Strait responded by notching his third graded stakes score, taking the 1 1/8-mile race by a length and a half with Umberto Rispoli aboard.

Smooth Like Strait made his next start in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar in November, and lost by a head to late-rallying Domestic Spending in a thriller. He then returned to the winner's circle with a professional three-quarter-length score over Storm the Court in the Grade 1 Mathis Brothers Mile at Santa Anita on Dec. 26 to close out his 3-year-old season.

On Mar. 6, 2021, Smooth Like Strait made his 4-year-old debut in the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita. He rated off the early pace, then made his move on the final turn. Although he was unable to catch the winner, he held off a swarm of others to hold on for second. In his his next start in the $1 million, Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes, Smooth Like Strait led into deep stretch but setteld for third behind dead-heat winners Colonel Liam and Domestic Spending.

Following that strong effort, McCarthy shipped Smooth Like Strait back to his California base to prep for a start in the $300,000, Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes at Santa Anita on May 31. He was sent off as the odds-on favorite in the Shoemaker - the first domestic "Win and You're In" qualifier for the 2021 Breeders' Cup World Championships - and he ran like it, setting a lightly pressured pace, drawing off in early stretch, and then having enough left to hold off Say the Word late by 1 1/2 lengths. Smooth Like Strait earned an expenses-paid berth in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile Presented by PDJF with the victory.

Smooth Like Strait finished second in his next three races, all of them graded stakes in California. He went off at 10-1 in the Mile, and set the pace most of the way before getting caught late by the rating Space Blues. Smooth Like Strait held on for second, beaten by three-quarters of a length.

Ivar (BRZ)

Ivar (BRZ) was born in Brazil, started building his reputation in Argentina and has become a consistently strong performer since being imported to North America. He has prepped for a third try in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile with a victory and a second in his two races this year: winning the Jonathan Schuster Memorial on July 9 at Horseshoe Indianapolis and was the runner-up in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on Sept. 17. His return to the races after being given the winter off was delayed a bit by a minor hoof injury and the cancellation of turf stake in June at Churchill Downs.

The 6-year-old son of Agnes Gold (JPN) opened his career in 2019 by winning his three starts by a combined 14 lengths. Two of them were by 6 lengths each in Argentinean Group 1 races, the Gran Criterium on turf and the Estrellas Juvenile on dirt.

Paulo Lobo, the Brazilian-born, Kentucky-based trainer, has handled the horse during his three seasons of racing in North America. In 2020, Ivar was third in the $712,000 Tourist Mile at Kentucky Downs, won the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland at 14-1 and finished fourth by 2 lengths in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile. Last year, he started his season with a sixth by 2 lengths in the Grade 1 Turf Classic at Churchill Downs, was fourth by 2 lengths in his defense of the re-named Keeneland Turf Mile, and was 3rd by 1½ lengths at 24-1 in the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile.

Beyond Brilliant

Beyond Brilliant made his graded stakes debut in the Grade 2 Twilight Derby at Santa Anita Park on Oct. 31. He rated off the early pace and made a mild move to finish third.

In his next start, Beyond Brilliant won his first graded stakes race in style. He won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar on Nov. 27 in gate-to-wire fashion. Breaking from post position two, Kent Desormeaux put him on the early lead and rationed out his speed masterfully, having just enough left to hold on in the end.

Beyond Brilliant finished fourth in his 2022 debut, the Grade 1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita on March 5. He bounced back with a win in the Grade 2 Charles Whittingham Stakes on April 30.

Beyond Brilliant's sire (father) is multiple graded stakes winner Twirling Candy, out of the First Defence mare Summer on the Lawn.

Regal Glory

Regal Glory won her career debut by 5 ½ lengths in October 2018 at Belmont Park. She subsequently won the Stewart Manor Stakes on Nov. 11 by a nose in her final start as a 2-year-old.

The chestnut Animal Kingdom filly made her 3-year-old bow in the Grade 3 Sweetest Chant Stakes at Gulfstream Park in February 2019 and ran second in her graded stakes debut. She was the runner-up again in the Grade 2 Appalachian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association at Keeneland in April.

Regal Glory rallied to win the $200,000 Penn Oaks by 2 ¾ lengths on June 1 for her first win as a 3-year-old. She subsequently earned a breakthrough graded stajkes win when she overhauled stablemate Blowout in the stretch en route to a win in the Grade 3 Lake George Stakes at Saratoga in July. Regal Glory extended her winning streak to three with a dead-heat victory with Varenka in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes Aug. 17 at Saratoga. She closed her 3-year-old campaign with an unplaced finish in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes at Keeneland.

Regal Glory returned from a layoff of more than 7 1/2 months with a second-place finish on yielding turf in the Grade 3 Intercontinental Stakes at Belmont Park in her 4-year-old bow. She subsequently ran fourth three weeks later in the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes June 27 at Belmont. She regained her winning form Sept. 12 at Kentucky Downs when she outfinished Mitchell Road to win the Grade 3 Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes.

Regal Glory began her 2021 season with a half-length win in the Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct on Apr. 11. A few months later, she stormed from behind to win the Fasig-Tipton De La Rose Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 8. After running second to stablemate Blowout in the Grade 1 First Lady Stakes, Regal Glory secured her first Grade 1 win Nov. 28 at Del Mar with a 2 1/2-length victory in the Matriarch Stakes.

On Jan. 29, 2022, Regal Glory made her 6-year-old debut in the Grade 3 TAA Pegasus World Cup Filly and Mare Turf Invitational Stakes Presented by PEPSI at Gulfstream Park. Despite a wide trip, she surged to the front and drew off to win by 2 1/2 lengths.

In her next start, Regal Glory returned to Keeneland for the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland on Apr. 16. She got a great trip rating off the early pace and kicked on in the stretch to win impressively.

Next out, Regal Glory went off as the second choice in the Grade 1 Longines Just a Game Stakes at Belmont on June 11. She drafted towards the back of the pack early, while early leaders Leggs Galore and In Italian set very fast fractions. In the stretch, Regal Glory rolled to the front and won going away, covering a mile in 1:32.00.

Grade 2 winner Mary's Follies, by More Than Ready, is the dam (mother) of Regal Glory.

Malavath

Malavath enjoyed a nice 2-year-old campaign in 2021 in which she posted two wins, two seconds, and one third in five starts. The Mehmas filly won the Group 2 Criterium de Maisons-Laffitte at Chantilly and was runner-up by a half-length to Pizza Bianca in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

In her 3-year-old debut, Malavath won the Group 3 Prix Imprudence by 1 ½ lengths April 7 at Chantilly before an unplaced finish in the QIPCO One Thousand Guineas at Newmarket. Unplaced in Group 1 races in her next two starts, but beaten by less than three lengths in each of them, Malavath followed with a second-place finish in the Group 1 Qatar Prix de la Foret Presente Par Education Above All on Oct. 2 at Longchamp.

Malavath was produced by the New Approach mare Fidaaha, a full sister (same dam [mother], same sire [father]) to graded stakes winner Ceisteach.

Order of Australia

Unplaced in his only race as a 2-year-old for Aidan O'Brien in 2019, Order of Australia came into his own in his 3-year-old campaign. After running in a pair of Group 1 races, he won back-to-back starts in Ireland. Unplaced in a Group 3 race on soft turf, he was shipped to the U.S. for the FanDuel Breeders' Cup Mile presented by PDJF and pulled off a shocking upset at 73.20-1 odds with a powerful rally from off the pace. He won by a neck from stablemate Circus Maximus to pick up his first stakes win in a $2 million, Grade 1 race in which he needed a scratch just to draw in off the also-eligible list.

Order of Australia is a half-brother to multiple Group 1 winner Iridessa, winner of the 2019 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Annapolis

Annapolis turned heads at the summer 2021 Saratoga meet with a 4 ½-length score in his first race going 1 1/16 miles on turf. The Bass Racing homebred jumped up to graded stakes company for his next outing in the Grade 2 Pilgrim Stakes on Oct. 3 at Belmont Park, also held at 1 1/16 miles.

With Irad Ortiz Jr. riding for trainer Todd Pletcher, Annapolis stalked pacesetter Portfolio Company and dueled with that foe to the finish, prevailing by a head as the 3-5 favorite.

Annapolis made his 3-year-old debut in the Grade 2 Penn Mile Stakes at Penn National on June 3, 2022. He was the heavy 1-2 favorite and enjoyed a good trip rating in the three-path off the lead. However, when he was asked for run turning for home, he could not produce a serious closing kick, and was unable to pass longshot Wow Whata Summer, who pulled off an 83-1 upset. Annapolis finished second, beaten 1 1/2 lengths.

Following the Penn Mile, Annapolis got back on the winning track with a victory in the $100,000 Manila Stakes at 1 mile on the turf at Belmont on July 4. With the wind in his sails coming out of that stakes win, Annapolis next entered the 1 3/16-mile Grade 1 Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational on Aug. 6 and ran well in defeat to finish second in that $1million feature on turf.

Annapolis faced slightly easier competition in her next race and cashed in versus a field of only three rivals to win the Grade 3 $200,000 Saranac Stakes on Sept. 3 at Saratoga. Sent off as the 1-9 favorite with regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr. in the saddle, Annapolis took command from the start, setting an uncontested pace, and drew off in the stretch to an easy win in a time of 1:42.57 for the 1 1/16 miles. To this point in his career, he has still never finished out of the exacta in any of his first six career starts.

Annapolis is out of the Unbridled's Song mare My Miss Sophia, a Grade 2 winner and runner-up in the 2014 Longines Kentucky Oaks.

Kinross

After winning one of two starts as a 2-year-old in 2019, English-bred Kinross went four starts without a top-three finish at age 3 before he broke through with a win in the listed British Stallion Studs E.B.F. Hyde Stakes on the all-weather track at Kempton Park to close out his season.

The Kingman (GB) gelding competed exclusively in stakes during his 4-year-old campaign while racing in his home country, France, and in Dubai. He won both the Group 2 Unibet Lennox Stakes at Goodwood and the Group 3 Betway John of Gaunt Stakes at Haydock Park over the summer.

In 2022, Kinross reached career-best form by first coming up short by a neck in a bid to repeat in the World Pool Lennox Stakes and then taking two Group 2 Stakes back-to-back in late summer: the Sky Bet City of York Stakes at York on Aug. 20 and the Cazoo Park Stakes at Doncaster on Sept. 11, both at 7 furlongs.

Kinross is out of the multiple stakes-winning Selkirk mare Ceilidh House (GB). He is from the family of 2009 Virginia Derby winner Battle of Hastings (GB).

Domestic Spending

Domestic Spending opened his career with back-to-back victories in one-mile turf races, the first in February 2020 at Tampa Bay Downs and the second in June at Belmont Park. From there, the Kingman gelding was tested against stakes competition and finished third in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes July 18 at Saratoga.

Domestic Spending earned the first stakes win of his career in his next race when he edged Gufo by a head to win the $500,000 Saratoga Derby Invitational Stakes Aug. 15 at Saratoga.

Given a 3 ½-month freshening, Domestic Spending was shipped to Del Mar for the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby. He took command in the closing strides from runner-up Smooth Like Strait and again held off the late rush of Gufo, the third-place finisher, to prevail and earn a Grade 1 win.

Domestic Spending made his 2021 debut in the $1 million, Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic Stakes. He angled out for running room in deep stretch, and drew even with heavily favored Colonel Liam in the closing strides to finish in a dead heat for first in a thrilling race. The gelding continued his winning ways in the Grade 1 Resorts World Casino Manhattan Stakes at Belmont Park on June 5, catching his pace-setting stablemate Tribhuvan in the last few strides.

In his final start at age 4 in 2021, Domestic Spending finished a rallying second as the 2-5 favorite in the Grade 1 Mr. D. Stakes at Arlington Park (formerly the Arlington Million Stakes). He missed the 2021 Breeders' Cup with an inflamed foreleg and did not start through the first 10 months of 2022, although he was kept in training by Chad Brown. Brown made news in mid-October by stating that Domestic Spending could be a "surprise entrant" in the 2022 Breeders' Cup at Keeneland, after having been sent to the Kentucky track for training.

Front Run the Fed

Front Run the Fed was unplaced in his career debut on dirt in September 2018 but improved in his next start when switched to turf, finishing second by three-quarters of a length. In his first start at age 3 in 2019, the son of Fed Biz reached the winner's circle with a 1 ½-length score in a six-furlong turf sprint on April 14 at Aqueduct. He then won an allowance race at Belmont and followed that up with his first stakes win, taking the one-mile Better Talk Now Stakes at Saratoga by a half-length.

Front Run the Fed won one of his next four starts during 2019-`20 heading into a major test in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint Nov. 7 at Keeneland. He finished sixth among a full field, but only 2 ½ lengths out of first.

Racing exclusively in stakes at age 5, Front Run the Fed was winless in five starts during 2021, his best effort coming in his season debut when second by a head to Casa Creed in the Elusive Quality Stakes at Belmont Park.

He did not start in the 2021 Breeders' Cup but did return for a 6-year-old campaign in 2022, although he did not make his first start until July 18. Front Run the Fed won the Van Clief Stakes at Colonial Downs by a rallying head, and then moved back into graded stakes company, finishing fifth and fourth in the Grade 1 Fourstardave Handicap and Grade 2 FanDuel Turf Sprint Stakes, respectively.

Front Run the Fed is out of the winning Posse mare Lawless Miss and comes from an extended family of successful sprinters, including Grade 1 winner Jackson Bend and Grade 2 winner Lottsa Talc, both millionaires.

Casa Creed

UPDATE - Casa Creed has elected to race in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint

Casa Creed won an off-the-turf maiden race in his second career race, edging away in the stretch to win by 1 ½ lengths in August 2018 at Saratoga.

Unplaced in two subsequent stakes races on the main track, Casa Creed returned to the turf for his 3-year-old bow and won the Kitten's Joy Stakes in January at Gulfstream Park. Two starts later, the Jimmy Creed colt ran second in the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes at Gulfstream in March. After an unplaced finish in the Grade 2 American Turf Stakes Presented by Ram Trucks on the Kentucky Derby undercard, Casa Creed ran second in the Grade 2 Penn Mile in June and third by a half-length in the Manila Stakes in July.

Casa Creed earned a breakthrough graded stakes win in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes on Aug. 2, 2019 at Saratoga. Casa Creed moved up to challenge for the lead entering the stretch and gamely outfinished Sombeyay by a head to prevail in a thrilling finish.

Casa Creed won stakes races in back-to-back starts in the spring of 2021. He won the Elusive Quality Stakes at Belmont Park on April 24, storming from behind to win by a head. He made a similar rally in the Grade 1 Jackpocket Jaipur Stakes on June 5 to win in a 10.80-1 upset. Because the Jaipur is part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, Casa Creed earned a spot in the gate for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 7 with that win.

During the remainder of 2021, Casa Creed ran creditably but was winless in three starts, finishing third in the Fourstardave Handicap, fifth in the FanDuel Turf Sprint at Kentucky Downs, and then eighth in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, but only beaten by 3 ½ lengths. His connections sent him to the Middle East to kick off his 6-year-old campaign, and Casa Creed finished second by a neck in a turf sprint at Saudi Arabia and then fifth in the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai before coming back to his New York base.

After some time off, Casa Creed attempted a repeat win in the Jaipur Stakes on June 11 as part of the Belmont Stakes undercard. He saved ground through the turf of the six-furlong sprint with Luis Saez aboard, angled out in deep stretch, and ran down favored Arrest Me Red for an impressive victory. As in 2021, Casa Creed earned a Breeders' Cup berth with his Jaipur win, punching his ticket to the Turf Sprint at Keeneland in November.

What is the Breeders' Cup Mile?

The Breeders' Cup Mile (Grade 1) has created an interesting pattern of sorts in that, for this $2 million series on turf of the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, good things have come in two's. Four Mile events of the Breeders' Cup races have had repeat winners. Also, the Mile has had three horses who have posted two victories each.

Miesque, bred by owner Stavros Niarchos' Flaxman Holdings Ltd., sparkled in the Breeders' Cup Mile in 1987 at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, and conquered a significantly slower surface at Churchill Downs in Louisville the following year. Trained by Francois Boutin, the remarkable filly won by 3-1/2 lengths in California and by 4 lengths in Kentucky - the largest winning margins in the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships race's history.

On the strength of her single North American victories, Miesque was voted champion grass female in 1987 and 1988. The Niarchos family also campaigned Mile winners Spinning World (1997), Domedriver (Ireland; 2002), and Six Perfections (France; 2003) in the name of Flaxman Holdings, Ltd.

In 2003, 5-1 shot Six Perfections, a 3 year old filly taking on boys, stayed in between horses back in eighth early, then came on strong down the stretch splitting rivals to win by 3/4 length over 12-1 shot Touch of the Blues. The time for the mile distance on the firm turf course was 1:33 4/5. It was a neck back to 39-1 longshot Century City. 3-1 favorite Peace Rules set the early pace but had nothing left turning for home, fading badly and finishing last.

At the 2004 Breeders' Cup Mile, Singletary emerged as the champion at 16.50 odds with jockey David Romero Flores. Antonius Pius with jockey Jamie Spencer won second at 31.40 odds while France's Six Perfections with jockey Jerry Bailey placed third at 5.90 odds.

Goldikova, based in France, won the Breeders’ Cup Mile back to back in 2008 and 2009with jockey Olivier Peslier. In her second win in 2009 she was second last for much of the race and at the top of the stretch she was forced to go 5 wide. It looked like she was going to lose, but then she changed leads again and blasted past Coragious Cat to win in 1:32.26, 0.8 seconds off of the world record held by Mr. Light.

Claiborne Farm's homebred Lure, arguably one of the most accomplished horses never to win a year-end championship, also scored two daylight victories, winning by 3 lengths in the 1992 Breeders' Cup Mile at Gulfstream Park, and by 2 ¼ lengths in the following year at Santa Anita Park for trainer Claude R. "Shug" McGaughey III.

While not necessarily possessing talent to equal Miesque's or Lure's, Da Hoss became a two-time Breeders' Cup Mile winner by virtue of his courage and the innovative training regimen of Michael Dickinson. In 1996, Dickinson had his assistant, Joan Wakefield, test the Woodbine turf course in high heels to determine the best path for the Gone West gelding, who won by 1 1/2 lengths.

Da Hoss missed the entire following season of the Breeders' Cup races due to injury and came back to run in the 1998 Breeders' Cup Mile with only one start in two years. He rallied on a firm Churchill Downs turf course to overtake Hawksley Hill (Ireland) and win the Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships Mile race by a head.

Also experiencing consistent success in the Breeders' Cup Mile are the European-based horses. Nine of the Mile's first 20 winners had been based with European trainers prior to their wins.

Most remarkably, the Breeders' Cup Mile has also seen the domination of the Northern Dancer sire line. Although the great Windfields Farm stallion did not sire a winner himself, six of his sons and two of his grandsons have sired winners, accounting for 12 victories in the Mile's first 20 years. His sons Danzig and Nureyev have each sired three winners.
